@Rockwale @mlbelites_ First place was occupied. If there had been less than two outs the batter would be out by rule. Runner could advance at their own risk. In this case there were two outs. The above rule does not apply. Catcher over thought this

Catcher dropped the ball on strike 3. If that happens, you have to tag batter or throw to first before he reaches. Good job by the batter to know the rule & see the dropped ball. That was on the catcher & losing team coaches. They had to see other team runners running bases fast. Did they think they were just running for fun? Ump called third strike. Catcher dropped the ball. Nothing the ump can do except see how it plays out. He can't call attention to it for either side. Catcher could have tagged first runner to cross before touching plate, or at least second runner to tie it. He did neither.

I need examples of a US city with at least three pro sports teams where the NHL team is top two in fandom in the city. Boys here said Detroit, DC and Tampa. I think I’ll give them DC and Tampa, but contest Detroit. Some guys said Minnesota, I think Twins are bigger than Wild.

Spin off FB and MBB into a separate business that operates like a professional league, maintains affiliation with universities through licensing fees and educational initiatives. Bring all others under university umbrella as intramural-plus loss leaders. Hard but doable.
Blake Baratz@blakebaratz

College sports is a huge business. It’s capitalism when it’s convenient, and restrictive when it isn’t. Here’s the unfortunate reality. Football and basketball can no longer be responsible for funding an entire athletic department. The universities need to make a decision on which sports that lose money they want to support. Period. It isn’t the football team’s responsibility to fund everything. Let’s start there.

@ESPNAssignDesk You do not have permission to use it — as I’ve told you numerous times in DMs. Shouldn’t have laid off all those reporters if you wanted locker room content.

Georgia Tech Basketball is at a all time low. I have been in denial but I’ve had enough. Damon Stoudamire is the WORST coach in GT athletics history. @RGAlpert He needs to be gone before he leaves the arena tonight.

Not enough discussion on here about how at some point this spring we're going to inaugurate a major new bridge (on a new alignment) in the US for the first time in 16 years. Likely the last for many many decades, too

@north0fnorth Chicago rapidly expanded and became a major city in the 1880s-1890s, its development predated the urbanization of most US cities outside the northeast. So it's a unique city in terms of the US' history.

spending 3 weeks on the northeast corridor has really solidified for me how much of an outlier chicago is in the us. you’ve got this one row of high-density pre-car cities with high transit usage (for the us), one midwest city built like that 720mi away, and nothing else similar

Honestly with the current 15 day forecast for Cincinnati atm not having us above freezing at all there is a legit chance the Ohio River might freeze up at least with a thin layer.... a complete freeze up hasn't happened since January 1977.

My first job out of college was covering Indiana high school sports for The (Louisville) Courier-Journal. Lived in Clarksville and traveled all over the lower half of the state. Loved it. Great people who supported their local schools. That part of the state is bedrock IU country. The paper also covered IU daily. When I became a columnist I wrote a fair amount about IU football, including a game at Wisconsin in 1994 when the Hoosiers were a promising 3-0. Badgers 62, IU 13. It was over immediately. That symbolized the futility of the program. It seemed irrevocable. Like everyone else, I am properly gobsmacked by 16-0. It's the greatest college sports story I've seen, perhaps the greatest American sports story. (Miracle on Ice and the Milan Miracle are the theoretical competition, I'd say.) I'm happy for all those IU fans and graduates, including many of the latter in the media business. You are living a dream that actually was beyond even dreaming, for many. Keep soaking in it.

Snow and ice projections getting all the buzz, understandable, but do not overlook the temperature projections as you prepare for this storm and the days after. Lower Ohio River valley could remain below freezing for 10 days or more, RARE. Low temperatures in single digits or below 0 for nearly a week, RARE. These are temperatures that are life threatening if not prepared. Stay warm. Stay safe. Prepare now.
