@aaronlage@memeticsisyphus Lincoln could have borrowed a fax machine, didn’t have to own one. And a samurai could’ve traveled on a ship to a location where a fax could be received. The statement was true as stated.
No, not possible. Though the fax machine had been invented, Lincoln neither possessed one nor did a Samurai. Let alone any trans-Pacific cables to facilitate the job.
That's like saying it would've been possible for Richard the Lionheart to be killed by a gun. Just because the technology had been invented in one part of the world, doesn't mean it existed with possible usage in another part.
Luigi is what happens when you corner people.
It’s practically a law in America to have healthcare if you can afford it. Health insurance has made health costs so unbelievably high, treatment without their approval is a financial death sentence. Your health rides on insurance companies approving medical procedures.
Luigi, who needed back surgery and missed the window of opportunity to had a normal life due to a denial of care via his insurer, now has to live a life of pain.
Luigi has absolutely no recourse for what is essentially a moral pitfall from the insurer that cascaded into physical circumstances that will now affect him forever. So he killed the ceo of his insurer, displaying clearly that lack of integrity and empathy when in a position of power and consequence will get you killed from a disgruntled individual you screwed over.
You can’t harm people endlessly then act shocked, or even feign moral outrage when someone retaliates.
It was a rebellious act against a system that (in theory) functions on civil discourse and processes. It erodes the concept of civil law. However, civil law failed to protect the people healthcare executives and policy makers screw over on the daily while happily taking their policy money and the people having no recourse.
Luigi did more to alter health policies in favor of the people via instilling fear into upper management with the threat of death if they continued the ruthless corporate business model in a business that is supposed to help lessen the blow from health costs.
There’s a lesson in there. You may consider it a bad one, but it’s an overall lesson that has been used since the dawn of civilization to keep the powerful and apathetic people in line.
What Luigi did was wrong from a legal standpoint only. From a moral standpoint, this is no different than Marcus Crassus having gold poured down his throat.
@they_bash@Nyxalorent@arkb1987@thechosenberg I’m certainly not the king of morals, but the king of morals gave me, among other things, a list of 10 rules to abide by and one of them says thou shall not steal. Good enough for me.
@Nyxalorent@arkb1987@thechosenberg By the way, this is the same type of thinking that had people supporting Luigi Mangione after he killed Brian Thompson the health company executive. Whether the executive was a bad dude or not, it’s murder. I’m not saying you supported Mangione but it’s the same justification.
@MattHornsby2@arkb1987@thechosenberg It can never be morally wrong to “screw over” a credit card company that has ruined tens of thousands of lives with interest payments and cornering the credit market.
@arkb1987@thechosenberg I think you missed the point. He has no estate. He will die being what we call insolvent and there will never be an estate opened. The credit card debt will just be written off. It’s morally wrong to do that of course.
@LeachSie@thechosenberg It may be fraud and of course they can assert a claim against the estate, which they could do whether it’s fraud or not, but they 1000% cannot come after relatives. That’s absurd to even say.
@thechosenberg Thats called fraud , read small print in terms and conditions and somewhere there will be statement about if you have knowledge of any reason that may prevent you from repaying the debt you should notify the credit card company and by not doing so they can claim on estate/family
My wife's due date is today. This weekend she seemed scared and asked to have a serious conversation with me.
Wife - "If the baby is born on my due date will you make a Star Wars joke?"
Me - "Of course not. I would never dream of it."
Wife - "I just needed to check."
can’t even imagine how amazing it must had been to have read the project hail mary book before the movie came out. like going through it being announced, the trailer, the reviews and then seeing it yourself… while already being a fan. i wish i read it sooner😭
I just finished the Red Rising trilogy and, omg, one of the best fiction stories I've ever read.
I flew through these three books in under a month. I only wish there was more. What are some other series that you consider on the same level?
@ManifestHistory Can’t go wrong with any plan, but Genesis and Exodus give a great statement of the plight and depravity of man, and the gospels are a great place to go for the remedy to that. God bless.
I’ve finally decided to read the entire bible. So far, I’ve read Genesis and Exodus. I’m obviously really interested in reading the Gospels and New Testament. I’m debating skipping ahead to the Gospels. What do you recommend I do: Read the bible from front to back or skip ahead and read the Gospels (or entire New Testament) and then go back to the Old Testament.
I never update my phone. My voicemail finally just stopped working. I had dozens of messages on there I couldn’t check. Finally, I had to update the phone.
The messages….gone.
I still think about them sometimes. I wonder where they went.
Saying “baptism doesn’t save because the thief on the cross wasn’t baptized” is the equivalent of saying “the Lord’s Supper isn’t necessary because Abraham didn’t celebrate it.”
Flight delayed on tarmac. Missed our connection. Based on the other flights available, which were also delayed, and the fact that taking a flight tomorrow would require getting back into a security line stretching seemingly for miles, we decided to get a car and drive five hours to our destination. That’s how bad air travel is right now. Driving is faster.
Air travel is awful in this country. People don’t realize just how much it sucks unless they have to do it a lot. It’s not just TSA. Flight delays. Air traffic control issues. Service is even worse than usual. Every airport is crowded and slow and worn down and dirty. Everyone brings their dogs. The term “service animal” doesn’t mean anything anymore.
Air travel used to be luxurious. People used to wear suits. Working for an airline was prestigious. The employees took it seriously. It sucks now. It’s terrible. This is the kind of thing our leaders should be fixing. Because the most frustrating thing is that it is so eminently fixable. If only anyone bothered to try.
