This has been the toughest set of elections @prestonlabour has faced for decades and out of the 8 seats we defended we held half. All brilliant Labour women🌹. So gutted for comrades we lost caught up in forces outside their control which is no reflection on their hard work, talent and dedication. We remain the largest party by far with 22 seats out of 48 and I am confident our administration will continue with the radical zeal we are known for.

Mainstream’s Interim Council sends its congratulations to Andy Burnham on becoming Leader of the Labour Party and, from Monday, Prime Minister. We look forward to playing our part in making real change happen - with our eyes wide open to the scale of the challenges ahead.

Congratulations to @AndyBurnham. This change in leadership must be the start of a reset with public and the labour movement. We need action to prove that we can deliver the change that people voted for, redistributing wealth and power into communities and standing firm on Labour values. As Andy recognised in his speech, this is our final chance to seize the historic opportunity of a Labour government and defeat Reform ahead of the next election. We must not fail.

If Labour doesn’t embrace a real change agenda that shifts the balance of forces in favour of ordinary people, it will hand Farage the keys to No. 10. We trust @AndyBurnham to be that force for change, and will be firm in helping him deliver that agenda.

Absolutely delighted government has agreed the 'four unitary' proposal supported by @prestoncouncil as we move rapidly toward Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). This is the best decision for both Preston and wider Lancashire. Within our new local authority area we will have oustanding areas of natural beauty, three universities, two hospitals, advanced manufacturing, significant council led regeneration, a first class cultural offer and a commitment to grow our democratic economy and reduce poverty. Looking forward to working with partners to deliver this positive change.
