I am truly appalled at the video posted by Israeli Cabinet Minister Ben-Gvir taunting those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla. This violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity in the way people should be treated. We are in touch with the families of a number of British nationals involved to provide them with consular support. We have demanded an explanation from the Israeli authorities and made clear their obligations to protect the rights of our citizens and all those involved.

I am Israel’s top diplomat in the U.S., at the heart of our most important alliance. Ben Gvir’s antics take a sledgehammer to our diplomatic efforts while Israel’s enemies gleefully jump on every unfortunate nonsense to discredit and demonize. The provocateurs of the Flotilla charade were properly detained in accordance with international law and will be deported to their home countries. End of story.

De extreemrechtse Israëlische minister Ben Gvir vernedert de activisten van de Gaza Flotilla, onder wie verschillende Belgen. Op verschillende video’s zijn ze te zien terwijl ze geknield zitten, met geboeide handen en hun hoofd tegen de grond. Het zijn niet de leden van de Flotilla die criminelen zijn, maar de Israëlische Staat, die zijn genocide tegen de Palestijnen voortzet. Deze activisten moeten onmiddellijk worden vrijgelaten en België moet sancties opleggen aan Israël, dat in volledige straffeloosheid handelt.

Important @hagar_shezaf: Ben Gvir has spent 3 years boasting about turning Israel's prisons into hell and torture camps, complete with PR videos. Just this week she spoke with Ali Samoudi, a Palestinian journalist held a year in administrative detention, who lost half his body weight and described violence, humiliation, and starvation. Humiliating photos of detainees are routinely circulated by authorities. The treatment of the flotilla activist now is horrifying but it's long past time people woke up. Not everything in life is hasbara and how things look. There's a reality most prefer to deny at best, or even encourage. This is a direct continuation of that.

בן גביר מסתובב כבר כמעט שלוש שנים ומתגאה בכך שהפך את בתי הכלא בישראל לגהנום ומחנות עינויים, כולל סרטוני יח״צ של ביקורים שלו בבתי כלא. רק השבוע שוחחתי עם עלי סמודי, עיתונאי פלסטיני בכיר שהיה עצור שנה במעצר מנהלי בבתי הכלא מגידו וקציעות והשיל חצי ממשקלו וסיפר על אלימות, השפלות והרעבה. תמונות משפילות של עצורים זה גם דבר שהרשויות פה מפיצות בשגרה. היחס לפעיל המשט עכשיו מחריד אבל הגיע מזמן שאנשים פה יתעוררו - לא הכל בחיים זה הסברה ואיך דברים נראים. יש מציאות שהרוב מעדיפים להתכחש אליה במקרה הטוב או אפילו מעודדים אותה. זה המשך ישיר של זה.

Ben Gvir inadvertently did journalism a service. Without his public broadcasting of the abuse, flotilla detainees' testimonies would have been met with denial and a smear campaign against them and reporters who carried their accounts.

Yes, the Ben-Gvir video is disgraceful. But that's not the issue. The (obvious) issue is that if that's how nonviolent European protesters are treated in public, any person with a brain can imagine how Palestinians are treated behind closed doors. *That* is the real scandal.
