In the best case scenario, Trump struck a deal to reopen a Strait that was open before the pointless war he started, with the IRGC demonstrating its control over the Strait and potentially extracting fees plus sanctions relief. Thousands of innocents - including hundreds of children - dead in Lebanon and Iran for no reason. U.S. troops killed and wounded. U.S. embassies and bases in the Middle East badly damaged. U.S. standing in the world obliterated. U.S. munitions badly depleted. Hundreds of billions spent. Prices up everywhere. More global economic fallout to come. Putin strengthened and enriched. Just a catastrophic situation even in the best of circumstances. A profoundly shameful episode in American history no matter what happens next.

As we focus on Iran and Lebanon, let's not forget what’s happening in the West Bank. In one year, more than 36,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced and 240 were killed. There were over 1,700 attacks by Israeli settlers. We must end U.S. military aid to Netanyahu.

I guess maybe 4) could be categorized as a surprise, but every other part of this strikes me as extremely predictable, which begs the question of what the hell they think they’re doing.

I have talked to some Israeli officials and read a good deal of Israeli media. Here is how the war in Iran is perceived there so far: 1) On a tactical level, they believe it has gone very well and Israel has destroyed more of the Iranian military capability than expected. 2) They are disappointed that the regime has not been weakened as much as expected and that they remain in firm control. In particular the lack of a "rise up" among the population is a cause of concern. 3) They are finding Trump to be unreliable. While Israel favors a prolonged campaign to ensure total dismantlement of threats, Trump has signaled a desire to end the war "soon," creating a potential rift in war aims. 4) Hezbollah is stronger than expected. It has hit Israel with drones and missiles and killed soldiers. They have recovered better than expected. 5) The inability of Ben-Gurion airport to withstand closing and chaos has shown fragility in Israeli social cohesion. 6) They are disappointed in the lack of support from Gulf States who want an end to the war rather than the escalation Israel wants. 7) Israel accepts that the regime in Tehran will survive and just hopes that this weakens them in preparation for the next round. 8) There is a growing fear among Israeli strategists that they are winning the war but losing the region. While military targets are being obliterated, the civilian infrastructure damage is causing a backlash. 9) The war is proving very expensive. The need to divert NIS 28 billion ($9 billion) to the military has forced the government to freeze social projects, leading to the first significant anti-government protests since the war began, specifically from the middle class bearing the tax burden. 10) They are aware that the war is very unpopular in the US and that Israel is being blamed. They are concerned about the ramifications for the alliance. While Netanyahu is painting this as a huge success, it really doesn't look like one to Israeli strategic planners. The public knows it as well.

The cruelty in Gaza and the West Bank has escalated since the Iran War began, all with the complicity of the United States--even when it is US citizens who are killed by settlers.
Louisa Loveluck@leloveluck

3 more Palestinians killed in the West Bank, activists report, as settlers expand attacks under cover of war. Masked men arrived to Khirbet Abu Falah at 2am, soldiers came after. Thaer (24) & Fares Hamayel (57) shot dead. Mohammed Hassan (55) suffered heart attack after tear gas.

In Gaza, Israel treated almost everything as a military target, inflicting general misery so as to weaken Hamas. I fear that the US and Israel might be attempting something similar in Iran, targeting civilian infrastructure like water supply in a way I find unconscionable.
Timothy Snyder@TimothyDSnyder

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.

Whatever you think about war with Iran and our relationship with Israel, do you think it is appropriate for a sitting US senator to coach another country's leader on how to best draw a US president into a decision to launch a war?

WSJ: To help make the case on Iran, Graham traveled several times to Israel in recent weeks, meeting with members of the country’s intelligence agency. “They’ll tell me things our own government won’t tell me,” he said. He spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, coaching him on how to lobby the president for action. wsj.com/politics/polic…

A horrific US war crime, up there with My Lai. A must-read for all the folks in my mentions yesterday screaming that they knew definitively this was an Iranian misfire. And also, a teachable moment on the laws of war and, perhaps, the perils of AI warfare. 🧵

A New York Times investigation indicates that it was a US strike on an Iranian school that killed 175 people, mostly children. nytimes.com/2026/03/05/wor…

A rather scary read... and a repeat of what we saw in Gaza. "As planning for a potential strike in Iran was underway, Maven, powered by Claude, suggested hundreds of targets, issued precise location coordinates, and prioritized those targets according to importance, said two of the people. The pairing of Maven and Claude has created a tool that is speeding the pace of the campaign, reducing Iran’s ability to counterstrike and turning weeks-long battle planning into real-time operations, said one of the people. The AI tools also evaluate a strike after it is initiated, the person said." washingtonpost.com/technology/202…

The new Middle East, as seen by Netanyahu, is coming into view. "Summarising Israeli government’s position, Citrinowicz said: “If we can have a coup, great. If we can have people on the streets, great. If we can have a civil war, great. Israel couldn’t care less about the future . . . [or] the stability of Iran." ft.com/content/dd070e…

America's DHS, via WSJ: Corey Lewandowski "fired a U.S. Coast Guard pilot after [Kristi] Noem's blanket was left behind on a plane" — a decision that was reversed when they realized they needed someone to take them home. Though Noem and Lewandowski say they're not having an affair, "people said they do little to hide their relationship inside the department." wsj.com/politics/polic…

The government claimed she rammed Border Patrol agents with her vehicle before an agent shot her five times. But new bodycam video shows the agent turned his steering wheel toward Marimar Martinez and that he was congratulated for "excellent service" after shooting her.
