The people proposing to cancel or solar power Cassini in the 90s were dumb, solar and launch wasn't there yet. But it's still funny how the joke design drawn to show the impracticality has a smaller array than what SpaceX is proposing for a smaller mass produced satellite bus.

@SpaceKoala Lightweight solar with reflectors could complete on power-to-weight out to Saturn or so

@SpaceKoala Or even without reflectors, top end lightweight solar is at 3 kW/kg while speculative NEP nuclear designs are at 20-30 W/kg, and for commercial/regulatory reasons solar will continue to advance faster. Reflectors could divert hundreds of kW/kg, allowing power out to Neptune.

@TiagoNugent It's heavily stylizing the Valkyrie concept for screen, in the original the nozzle was a skeletal tensile structure 10km ahead of the craft so that barely any heat hit any part of the vehicle

these people forget that the hyper left have now decided to arm themselves with rifles, guns, and explosives i don't think people realize how radicalized these people have gotten the stereotype of the right winger with weapons is old the permanent underclass can out shoot you
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

Some tech people in SF have a quiet, deep-seated contempt for people of average IQ, or people who work outside tech. For some, this feeds into a complacency toward the idea of AI putting the normies on permanent welfare -- they think normies are already useless anyway.

@ironcrakka It happened in the Clone Wars once In general I think it's meant to be something that's survivable but you don't really want to do unless the planet you're in literally just got shot by the Death Star

it's really funny to me that the disney star war movie that breaks hyperspace the most is rogue one. you can explain all of the stuff in the sequels, if other contortions don't suffice, as being 40 years of tech advancement. but rogue one has an atmospheric jump in 0BBY

There any many reasons to be skeptical of this sort of "the future will be majority Amish" extrapolation. But for the sake of argument, let's imagine it came to pass. The result would not be a world *run* by the Amish. It would be a world where all technology and

Yes. OpenAI thinks that almost everyone is going to need to go on welfare, forever. But they're also not big promoters of welfare! That's the thing -- if AI creates radical inequality, that will include inequality of power. noahpinion.blog/p/what-if-a-fe…
Eric Levitz@EricLevitz

Last week, OpenAI argued that the government may need to create a vast new welfare state to counter AI-induced unemployment and inequality. And yet, the company's leaders have ignored - or abetted - attacks on actually existing social programs vox.com/politics/48546…

@sanstitre2000 The old Walter Miller story The Big Hunger was set in a universe with lots of Earthlike planets but expensive interstellar travel, so the stars were colonized by just dumping enough people to start stone age civilization onto planets and then waiting.

@animalologist Huh, I feel like I've never really been able to get too aroused to anything overly abstract or disembodied? Like if I have a nighttime fantasy my brain usually ends up crafting some kind of basic narrative and characterization first.

@sporadica I think AI safetyist people are more likely to actually go do terrorism despite being a smaller group, at least until some large industry has serious AI layoffs. Progressives don't really feel AI as a serious threat yet, they just find it annoying.
