@Apocryphal_Book @peligrietzer An interesting take on the Arthurian mythos, which deals with place and who belongs there, as well as his familiar favourite subjects - and it gave us some interesting musings from Le Guin

@peligrietzer Thoughts on The Buried Giant? It’s clearly the biggest departure from his trademark style and tone. To answer your question, I think number 1 in this category is Vonnegut.

Kazuo Ishiguro has to be one of the most respected 'easy' writers since the 19th century, no?

@saintsoftness the ideal way to read a book is to take it in isolation and understand nothing of the context of its creation, it's what the author would have wanted (if we dare to assume the writer wants anything)

As yes because otherwise we come to reading in a “natural” tabula rasa state influenced by zero material and social conditions, which we should definitely not think about in combination with formal qualities lest we become impure.
Philip Womack@WomackPhilip

I do, personally, think that the decline of English Lit has got a lot to do with it becoming, essentially, a branch of sociology. How to kill a book: read it through an -ism lens. Of course, sometimes it can be useful; but most of the time, it leaves a deadened feeling. Most

Unbound/Boundless owes me $15k+ on a book that in its first royalty reporting cycle had sold around 3k copies of its 5k copy print run of which I have not seen a single penny. They also haven’t even reimbursed me for postage costs I incurred mailing out the arcs in the US
The Bookseller@thebookseller

Authors published by the crowdfunding publisher Unbound (@unboundsocials) will not receive historic royalty payments for sales of their books unless Boundless, the new publisher founded following Unbound going into administration, "survives and thrives" 👇 #Echobox=1748593064" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thebookseller.com/news/unbound-a…

@dionehwrites Hit the top 1% this time around with a script I thought wouldn't be their thing at all - the closest I've got so far. Onwards and upwards for both of us!

@SofiaAjram 'Roses' was excellent! There's so much to dig into there, untangling history and rumour. The spine of that anthology.

It's funny how much you look forward to announcing your first book and when the news finally hits there are no words to describe it. Being a writer without words is a surprisingly beautiful feeling. You can read Van Helsing's Guide to Monsters and Dating next year!
CLASH Books@CLASHBooks

Do people really hate first-person present in adult speculative fiction THAT much? I'm testing some scenes & trying to find the right voice for my upcoming project, and it feels right, but I've heard countless people vocalize how they are vehemently against it outside YA.

@LarsHoel_writer You can't necessarily tell if someone is an amazing writer from the first ten pages, but you can usually tell if they're not an amazing writer from a single page.

I realize literary agents are flooded with queries, yada yada. But can they really get a sense of the story from the first ten pages of the manuscript? The first five? My favorite agents are the ones asking for the first three chapters. #AmQuerying #TheLastRadioStation

@diabolicalplots Ah, that's funny. Funny because I got one of those just yesterday! And my response to the "editing services" part is "abso-fucking-lutely not." Rejection is all part of the process and there are plenty of good editing services. They do not belong together.

In The Rose Tower, Max Hallam delves into the world of cultists and lavish excess, and a piece of art that is not entirely of this realm. When you open the door to another world, be careful not to let something else step in…

@JennaDevillier NetGalley encourages you to dual-post to GR, though, with its option to do it automatically. Do you think that in itself is part of the problem?

@Max_Hallam Goodreads is for readers, and the average reader doesn’t read a book until it’s released. If we’re talking ARCs, that’s what Edelweiss and NetGalley reviews, and blurbs are for

I just really feel like Goodreads should seriously consider not allowing people to review a book that hasn’t been released yet. It wouldn’t solve every problem, but it would be a start.
