If you still think corruption only happens in "other countries", this might make for uncomfortable reading. Whether you agree with @RMcAlpineOrg conclusions or not, it's a timely reminder that power without accountability is dangerous anywhere.
Cllr Fiona Higgins@Fiona_Higgins_

🏛️ Tuesday, my case against the Standards Commission comes before the Court of Session. It asks a critical question of Scottish democracy in 2026: Can elected representatives challenge power, present relevant evidence and still expect a fair hearing?

Smash the unions? I'm not a fan of boycotts so fighting them seems better. But either way, some unions becoming so ideologically debased that now more a barrier (rather than means) to improving workers rights?
Rosie Duffield MP@RosieDuffield1

Yet another reminder why hardworking women need to boycott mainstream unions as they *still* deem men's rights to be more important than women's. They also clearly don't want to adhere to Labour's 2010 Equality Act. Thank goodness for @DarlingtonUnion labourlist.org/2026/07/union-…

Perhaps the worst thing Alison said was that she didn't need to check facts with WRN NI because "it was a column". When I was commissioning columnists at The Economist, if any one had suggested that because it was a column they could make stuff up, I'd never have accepted a file from them again.
Francis Harris@fharris2011

A delight as @HJoyceGender dismantles the awful @AllisonMorris1, who disgracefully hides behind her journalist status to malign women on behalf of trans extremists Worth a listen. It's an education in the art of smearing and distortion bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Unpopular, but I ended up defending Zack Polanski on @GBNEWS (yuk!): 1) his right not to have to apologise-compelled speech is dangerous precedent; not saying sorry speaks for itself 2) As @AllisonPearson wins her case, reminder we shouldn't encourage police to criminalise speech

Great piece @Docstockk "Lecturers are now routinely expected to make adjustments to their ordinary critical approach as soon as someone has a diagnosis... (so) it was only a matter of time before such accommodations were extended to staff too." unherd.com/2026/07/jason-…

Unpopular take: Polanski should not be arrested. Unless a statement involves demonstrable imminent incitement to violence, it should be permitted speech. But yes, Polanski is a hypocrite and would have endorsed jailing Lucy Connolly for much less than this.
Nigel Farage@Nigel_Farage

This is what Zack Polanski has just posted on his instagram. If I was to post anything as inciteful then I would expect to be arrested, and so should Polanski.

Sure, frequent acts of Jihad are annoying, but god forbid anyone does anything quite as "divisive" as talking honestly about it.

Sorry but the UKG hasn't "failed" to provide anything. The fires are really the last thing to get political about. There is no water-carrying aerial support in the MoD locker - SG knew this when it made the request as the SFRS had told them so. AFAIK the ask was to confirm that.
The National@ScotNational

UPDATE: The UK Government has failed to provide the aerial water‑bombing support requested by Scottish ministers to tackle the Cairngorms wildfire The Scotland Office instead offered military support including Chinook helicopters and army personnel

Power doesn't have a postcode, it has a mandate. Yours was won in West Yorkshire, for West Yorkshire. Being made "pivotal" to national economic decisions by Andy Burnham gives you a say over people who never had the chance to vote for or against you in that role. That's not power shifting to the people, it's power shifting to whoever the Prime Minister has already decided he trusts, dressed up as devolution. If mayors are shaping UK policy, call it what it is: government by invitation, not by election.
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire@MayorOfWY

Power has a new postcode. Number 10 North signals a shift in power from Westminster to the hands of the people who know their communities. Today, @andyburnham has been clear that Mayors will be pivotal to driving the change we desperately need.
