If 38-year-old Novak Djokovic wins the Australian Open by defeating Sinner and Alcaraz (players 14-16 years younger than him), would you consider it the greatest achievement in the history of sports? I say yes. You?

For pitching authors, a quick update about what's new: 1) You will NOT receive a copy of your pitch submission via email. Last time, the feature wasn't reliable despite being enabled, and some people never received an email, leading to stress (understandably).

Brigham Editorial Query Month, Day 21: GREEN FLAGS in query letters that make agents raise their eyebrows and sit up a little straighter in their chairs. If we did red flags yesterday, we've gotta do green flags today, right? Green Flag #1 - Efficiency I've read half a billion query letters in my time (that number is approximate, and I can't be held liable for hyperbole), and there's just something about a concise-yet-clear query letter that lets me know within a sentence or two that this one's gonna be a winner. Do you know why this stands out in the slush pile? Because very few writers can actually do it. Writing a query letter that is short but punchy suggests a level of deft wordsmithing that is so rare, so those who manage it end up standing out in the slush pile. Green Flag #2 - Voice I've taught writing for over twenty years, and what I've learned is that you can't teach voice. It's something that comes from reading a ton of great books and then writing for thousands of hours until you've found your footing as an author. That said, a relatable, interesting, and/or emotionally resonant voice is what often connects anybody to any piece of writing. For those of you who have put in all those hours to hone yours, it shows in your queries. Agents can sense that. And they love it. Green Flag #3 - Polish If one of the biggest red flags is typos or grammatical errors, a green flag is exactly the opposite. Coming up with a concept and writing a pitch that will connect with agents is hit-or-miss, and we never really know if we're "doing it right." Grammar and mechanics, though? A hundred percent in the writer's control. Be a professional! Make sure your sub package is pristine! Green Flag #4 - Market/Genre Awareness This manifests in a couple of ways. First, there are clues that show an agent you understand your genre/market. Is the word count in the right range? Does the title's vibe fit the genre? Do your comps show an awareness of what's selling right now, and are they realistic and reasonable? The other way it manifests is in the pitch itself. You have to know a genre/market well to know how to break through in that genre/market. Agents are looking for fresh and unique takes that will work within the confines of what's already been done. In other words, have you pitched something that shows you understand how to be fresh and creative in your targeted space? Green Flag #5 - Personalization (Sometimes) I say all the time that you don't have to worry about personalizing a query letter because it takes so much time to do it for everyone. But there's no denying that agents really love personalization when it's done right. Even something as simple as showing that you're aware of what they're looking for and/or what kinds of authors they've repped in the past can prove you've done your homework. They do not like generic or forced personalization, but thoughtful and practical personalization? Big green flag.
