Andrej Karpathy built one of the most influential AI agent loops. Two students from Hong Kong just made it 5x better without changing the model, without extra compute, and without human guidance. The paper is called Bilevel Autoresearch. Mind-bending stuff.

On Karpathy’s GPT pretraining benchmark → 5x better performance.
The AI literally watched itself fail and invented techniques from combinatorial optimization, multiarmed bandits, and design of experiments… by itself.
Same model. Same budget. Way better results.

The crazy part? The outer loop uses the same LLM. No smarter model.
The 5x improvement comes purely from the bilevel architecture.
Bad rewrites auto revert. Nothing breaks.

Their fix: Add a second loop on top.
Inner loop runs and starts repeating itself
Outer loop reads the code + execution traces
Outer loop figures out exactly where it’s stuck
Outer loop writes new search logic in Python and injects it live
