Friday, 3 April, 2026, was Good Friday throughout Christendom, and Zimbabwe was no exception. Good Friday commemorates the day, in AD 33, when Jesus Christ was crucified on the Cross and died. As a practising Catholic, I believe that Jesus died a very cruel death to atone for our sins. In the Catholic Church, universally, Good Friday is commemorated by two events: a) by reliving the carrying of the Cross by Jesus and his crucifixion between two robbers; b) participation in a long service during which there are readings from the Bible on the events relating to the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus Christ’s twelve Apostles, the handing over of Jesus to Pontius Pilate for his trial, the unjust conviction of Jesus, the sentence to death by crucifixion, the carrying of the Cross by Jesus, the crucifixion of Jesus, death on the Cross, and Jesus’ burial. As practising Catholics, my wife and I were part of the Headlands Mt. Carmel Catholic small community procession, carrying the wooden cross. The procession walked a distance of five or so kilometres from Mt. Carmel High School, starting at 10 am, to Mt. Carmel Primary School, finishing at around 12.30 pm. I took my turn to symbolically carry the Cross. Fr. Canicious Mashati led the procession and the unusually long service, from 3 pm to 5.30 pm. The ZRP urges Zimbabweans to prioritize rendering assistance to victims of road traffic accidents, such as promptly notifying emergency services and offering first aid where possible, rather than capturing photographs or videos of horrific accident scenes and sharing them on social media. The law will take its course on anyone who will be found taking photographs or videos of accident scenes. A case in point is a recent road traffic accident involving the Ronald Mujuru’s family in Masvingo.

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged members of the public to prioritise assisting victims of road traffic accidents instead of recording and sharing graphic scenes on social media.
