💥 Curiosity and Focus 💥 Over the past few years, most of our biggest wins at @metalraise came from a combination of curiosity and focus. Conversely, most of our misses can be attributed to a lack of one or the other. Curiosity helps us discover and innovate. In the age of AI, it matters more than ever — our next breakthrough in strategy or thinking is now a prompt away. The most curious operators will have a much easier time building the future. Focus helps us stay on a defined path, concentrating resources across a finite surface area to achieve depth. Founders are constantly getting pulled in different directions, and most founders I know focus on too many things. The best operators are laser focused on a small set of priorities that matter most. The hard part is that these two forces pull against each other. Curiosity wants to expand; focus wants to contract. The best operators learn to balance these two opposing forces. Whenever I think about how we can do better, I come back to the same two questions: where do we need to be more curious, and where do we need to be more focused? Last week, at @metalraise, we sat down with @Alicebentinck, Co-Founder and CEO of @join_ef EF pioneered talent investing as a category — backing ambitious individuals before they have an idea, a co-founder, or a company. When EF started, VCs told them again and again: "do not do this. You cannot turn strangers into co-founders. You cannot turn strangers into startups." Almost $20 billion in portfolio value later, EF has proven the contrarian thesis works. I found Alice to be super thoughtful in how she reasons about company building, and I love how EF brings a fiercely independent perspective on fundraising in and around Demo Day. Running a fundraising process can be a massive amount of manual work: - building a target list (which btw should be 100-300 funds/investors, depending on round type), - scouring your network for warm-intro connectors, - sending your blurb individually hundreds of times to connectors, - processing feedback from each meeting, - etc... And, founders typically suck at it because we only do it every couple years. I've seen Metal in the past and it was very cool. Excited for this update and vision.

@usmangul @MetalRaise ran structured outreach for my raise once, ~40 targets, tracked every open and follow-up. the one meeting that actually moved was an intro from a founder the partner had backed years earlier. that signal lives in someone's head, not a database.
