"Code is the language that we use to understand physics." 💻 ⚛️ With billions of particle collisions happening at the Large Hadron Collider, @CERN research fellow Batoul Diab explains why software developers are more crucial to modern science than ever before.

Things I want my tax dollars used for: 1) Tracking contaminated fruits and vegetables. 2) Weather forecasting. Things I don't want my tax dollars used for: A no-bid contract Reflecting Pool project, ballroom, an arch, different White House columns.

2019: Trump admin ends pandemic early-warning program 2020: COVID-19 hits; kills more than 1.25 million Americans, 7 million globally 2025: Trump admin fires all of the CDC'S Vessel Sanitation Program employees 2026: Major noravirus outbreaks on cruise ships 2025: Trump admin makes cyclospora monitoring optional (was mandatory) 2026: Cyclospora outbreaks These systems are developed because we need them, because an outbreak revealed gaps in our ability to monitor, report, and respond to public health threats. Other major changes/cuts to public health that should concern you: Making vibrio monitoring optional. That's the "flesh eating" bacteria that sickens 80,000 Americans a year - with a hospitalization rate of 83% and fatality rate of 23% in V. vulnificus cases. Major cuts to laboratories that track antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the US each year, causing more than 35,000 deaths. Cutting labs makes it harder to detect resistant organisms early, contain outbreaks, guide treatment decisions, and monitor how resistance is evolving, increasing the risk that dangerous strains spread before public health officials realize there's a problem. Layoffs of 20,000 HHS staff, including one-fifth of the CDC. Withdrawal from WHO, cutting of USAID, and losing all of the local disease surveillance both agencies do. You would have thought the abject failure of the US' handling of COVID-19 would have led to greater investment in public health. Yet, because of the unqualified people in charge, we are in an even worse place now than we were before.

Better tools didn't improve Copilot code review. Rewriting their instructions did. 🧵

Reports that the White House has dismissed the remaining members of the Election Assistance Commission — all of whom were unanimously confirmed by the Senate, including a commissioner appointed by President Trump himself — should concern every American, regardless of party, because the EAC was established by Congress as an independent, bipartisan body to help states administer secure and credible elections. If these reports are accurate, removing every remaining commissioner just months before the 2026 midterm elections is an extraordinary step that demands an immediate explanation from the administration and raises profound concerns about political interference in the institutions that support our elections.

It really just bums me out that we have the resources to fix our society, stop our reliance on fossil fuels, guarantee healthcare, house the homeless, and feed every person in the country, but doing so would be a bad time for like, 8 men, so we can’t do it.

NEW from @GregTSargent: it sure sounds like @ICEgov is trying to stop the witnesses to the shooting of Hector Araujo from speaking out. All three of the people in the van have been kept in detention and now ICE is pressuring them all to agree to be deported immediately.

NEWS --> 3 men who were in the van with the victim of the ICE shooting in Texas are potential witnesses, but they're now under pressure to self-deport, a rep for the families tells me. They remain in detention even as ICE's story falters. Details here: newrepublic.com/article/212900…

Video appears to show no damage to the vehicle of the man ICE killed in Houston, who had lived in America peacefully for 35 years, despite ICE's claim that he "rammed" an ICE vehicle and "tried to run over" an agent. These people are not credible.
David J. Bier@David_J_Bier

Video shows the moments before ICE shot a worker who lived for 35 years in the United States. It appears to show it was ICE attempting to initiate contact with his vehicle, not the worker attempting to "ram" ICE agents

Cyclosporiasis, the parasite causing the current explosive diarrhea outbreak, is at a level 20x higher than its yearly average. This comes just 1 year after the Trump admin removed a cyclospora tracking mandate from the 'Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network.'

ICE slam man's head against stone wall—send him to hospital with fractured skull. Man's hands were already behind his back. Agents then physically assault legal observers—soon as they realize they're caught on video. Threaten to shoot witnesses with taser—even firing it up. Agent holds taser sideways "gangster style"—is this proper training? Man was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital. Incident occurred outside the Kane County Judicial Center in the St. Charles suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

I tell students all the time learning Computer Science, the two most important things to learn as you learn to code is Git and Markdown. Cool to see @code getting this upgrade!
Oren Melamed@OrenMe

Markdown experience in @code in getting first level citizen TLC You can now have WYSIWYG markdown experience with inline editing 📝 I previously posted about this but it required setting flags etc Now you can switch modes directly via the UI and set default editor mode In Agents window it is already default like this!

this is a perfect example of the political double standard that republicans benefit from: Democrats have never denied disaster aid for red states, and it would be a massive scandal if they did … but Trump does it and it’s barely a story because he does corrupt stuff every day

Politico: Trump denies disaster aid for 4 Democratic-led states President Trump on Friday rejected $227 million in aid requests from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island for help recovering from a major snowstorm in February Link to article: politico.com/news/2026/07/0…

We should have the best schools in the world, free for every single kid, well funded, ample resources and a love for learning in every seat. Instead, we have a cultural problem with intelligent people and boomers hate the idea of their ample resources being used for good.
Kate Willett@katewillett

I’m sorry but no. Boomers had a level of opportunity to build wealth that millennials and Gen Z will mostly never know. They should not be exempt from funding schools so even more falls on the back of generations who don’t own million dollar homes.
