At the invitation of Admiral Paparo, Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Director Patel led a senior delegation to INDOPACOM to advance joint operations against our adversaries. As part of this engagement, the delegation participated in a similar tour of the USS Arizona. As is standard practice on these visits, their hosts arranged the same Pearl Harbor tour that has been offered for years to senior administration officials across multiple administrations. He cut loose from his supply lines, marched his army deep into Mississippi in a thunderstorm, and slipped between two Confederate armies who outnumbered him combined. Then he attacked the smaller one first. By nightfall on May 14, his troops were splashing through the streets of Jackson, the Confederate state capital. Joseph E. Johnston, who had arrived in the city only the day before with 6,000 men, fled north in the rain. Grant walked into the Governor's Mansion and slept in the same bed Johnston had used the night before. Outside, Sherman's men were already at work torching the foundries, arsenals, and rail yards that fed the Confederate war machine.
