@hrw_fr

On this day devoted to celebrating mothers, I can’t help but think of the women now daring to speak against a system consuming society while so many of us remain stunned into silence. As Jennifer Welch recently remarked, women often carry the waters of patriarchy, yet when it floods, they are the ones left to drown. That’s why their voices matter, not because they are untouched by fear, but because they choose to speak despite it. I dedicate this Mother’s Day to them and thousands more we refuse to listen.

News: #Ethiopia quietly raises fuel prices just days after assuring supply recovery In a letter that was not made public but was distributed to fuel stations across the country, the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration announced on 4 May a new price increase taking immediate effect, raising costs across all petroleum products. Compared to 1 April prices increase, petrol rose by 17.6% from 142.41 birr, while white diesel increased by 10.7 percent from 163.09 birr per liter. Kerosene and jet fuel recorded the steepest hikes, more than doubling from around 151 birr and 150 birr respectively, marking one of the sharpest increases in recent fuel pricing. addisstandard.com/?p=56796

The European Union should adopt clear enforceable human rights benchmarks in its engagement with Ethiopia, so recent diplomatic and financial normalization doesn't undermine accountability efforts regarding abuses in the Tigray, Oromia, and Amhara regions. trib.al/eCnvWTp

Diplomatic “Concern”: Softer Way of Blaming Tigray The UK called for de‑escalation just as the TPLF moved to reinstate its pre‑war Regional Council. Its timing appears to be redirecting blame toward #Tigray, esp given UK’s years of silence while #Ethiopia continued its genocide.

#Yacob_Yatane: Heartbreak as Exiled #Ethiopian Journalist Dies in #Kenya, Proof of Poisoning Emerges Prior to his death, the journalist had allegedly complained of persistent threats and being consistently trailed by unidentified Amharic-speaking individuals in Nairobi. In November 2025 (late 2017 EC), Yacob shared that things became harder for him when two men and a woman allegedly tracked him to his residence and physically confronted and threatened him. Fearing for his life, Yacob turned to the Kenyan National Police Service as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (#UNHCR), and despite having to change his residence for security reasons, he remained vulnerable until his death. tuko.co.ke/people/family/…

#Ethiopia: Fuel shortage grounds ambulances in #Tigray, raises fears over collapsing referral system A worsening fuel shortage in Tigray has grounded ambulances across the region, crippled emergency referrals, and forced patients to rely on costly private transport or go without life-saving care, health officials have warned, as regional authorities renewed calls for urgent federal intervention. Kidu Teklu, Emergency and Ambulance Service Coordinator at the Tigray Health Bureau, told Addis Standard the region’s referral system has “completely collapsed” following months of deteriorating fuel availability, with the situation worsening sharply since mid-January. “Currently, there is no ambulance service in our region,” Kidu said, adding that ambulances distributed across districts after the Pretoria Agreement are now grounded due to severe fuel shortages. addisstandard.com/?p=56667
