High Performance Planning 📈and a free EBook! This picture represents one of the most high performance strategies I’ve been a part of with @teamgb and the rugby 7s squads. Both in 2016 where we won 🥈 and the 2020 campaign, had one common problem to solve. ➡️Bringing together players from different nations to gel and play at an optimum level over 12 weeks (Rio prep) or 5months (Tokyo prep) The physical preparation was very different for both these campaigns, with different strategies required because the game was different and the players too. What you may be surprised to here is we didn’t fitness test once in the lead up to Tokyo. But we had a specific reason for why. In the 2016 prep we had 34players to choose from, and in 2021 we had 24. Therefore maximising player availability and balancing that against functional overreaching and rotation of players in training looked very different. The way I problem solved and the questions I asked throughout didn’t change though. We needed to know what success looked like at key times: ✅ in competition ✅ in travel ✅ in training We also needed to know the plan, and how we would prepare to adapt it There was also a conscious effort to connect our high performance decisions to a greater purpose as part of a wider @teamgb team - creating relatedness in everything we did. If you’d like to read more about the 10 key principles I use in performance planning, comment “performance” by replying below and I’ll send you a link to a free ebook detailing each principle. 👍🙌🏉

Rest day 2 @letour aiming to control calories and keep carbohydrate intakes (relatively) low today with a big emphasis on nutrient density. Norwegian traditional lunch of fajitas with all of the trimmings prepared by chef @Nicki_Strobel 🥗 🌯

The biggest mistake coaches make is by trying to justify their existence. The majority of training session should be boring, “easy” and not include structure.

One of the most important performance concepts: Our brain is predictive. Poor performance is often the result of getting stuck in a bad predictive rut. Stress, pressure --> Fear, catastrophizing --> Avoid & protect coping/actions. To get out you have to...

MASTERS LEADERS SURVIVE MECHANICAL SCARE Aged 40-49, Masters Men is the largest category at the @CapeEpic. Winning it is a big deal, which is why the drama that unfolded for the Masters Category leaders on Stage 4 at Oak Valley is a tale worth telling. treadmtb.co.za/cape-epic-mast…

(2/2) ➡️ maintain intensity. Yes you can still do 2 hard session before the start. But you don’t need to go at 100%. 80-90% is fine 🛌 🧘‍♀️ 🍚 Focus on eliminating stress, good recovery and sleep and high carbohydrate availability

(1/2) ⏰ 10 Day to go the the start of the @CapeEpic - Here is how you should taper. Keep it simple. ⬇️ training volume. Aim to do the same hours in the last 10 day than you did in a normal training week

This tweet is exactly what is wrong with Genetic testing. Sorry Alan, but knowing one genotype is completely meaningless. Unfortunately we have only scraped the surface of starting to understand the complexities in action here

Doing a deep dive into the #genetics of training response. Any rs6552828 G/Gers in the house? If so, consider me jealous!

What is VO2max training? I really don't know the answer despite seeing it and related terms talked about all the time.

@Doug_Ennis @MedBonnevie @EllLipski @DajoSanders Anecdotally, I have seen this in athletes who ride more inside vs. outside. You are going to become stronger in what you do more often. Do 10% or less indoors and you will see 5%+ greater power outdoors. Do 10% or less outdoors and you will see greater power indoors.

@MedBonnevie @EllLipski @DajoSanders Would love to see something done on one of us that does better indoors than outdoors. Would LOVE it to be the opposite, but using the same bike, same power meter (Assioma), etc, I am consistently better indoors than out. Makes for good Zwift racing results but not ouch else 😅

⚠️ Don't use your indoor FTP test for outdoor intensity control (or vice versa) 🚴‍♂️ Research by @EllLipski @DajoSanders et al suggests indoor & outdoor test W differs considerably. 🧵A thread →

Speaking generally... I *do* believe in #Polarization of training intensities. I *don't* believe the majority of the fast work needs to be heavily lactic. Which could mean I don't believe in 'polarization' depending on how you want to define it.

@Ferguson_RA @ChrisPeden82 Would like to hear Chris’s opinion. But I can say it’s clear cut that AMPK signaling as a result of Endurance training will inhibit strength gains for around 3 hours. So make your conclusions around that.

A common problem with S&C for cycling is you’ve got cycle coaches who don’t lift or strength coaches who don’t ride trying to programme. Which often leads to poor programming as they have no appreciation of the effects of each other and how they can combine. 1/2
