I’ve refrained from posting about the Henry Nowak murder because something about it doesn’t sit right with me, but if the reports are accurate, Henry Nowak’s account is deeply concerning and the world should know his story. A man allegedly saying “I can’t breathe, I’ve been stabbed” being met with “I don’t think you have mate” raises serious questions about the police response in a critical moment. Police have a fundamental duty to protect the public. Henry Nowak was clearly in distress. This is a serious failure of care and response that deserves proper accountability.

Southampton Crown Court heard officers found Mr Nowak leaning against a house wall in Belmont Road, supported by the defendant’s father. The defendant's father said: “He keeps dropping down, so I am just trying to keep him up.” Mr Nowak can be heard saying “can’t breathe.” Police put handcuffs on Mr Nowak, who was lying on his side, telling officers he had been stabbed and that he could not breathe. The officer told Mr Nowak that he was under arrest for suspicion of assault. Mr Nowak repeated that he had been stabbed. A male voice said: “I don’t think you have, mate.” The video cuts out when CPR starts, and in its place, a transcript was read by Neil King, prosecuting, and the officer in the case. One officer said: "He is not unconscious, mate, he isn't breathing." Mr Nowak was pronounced dead at 12.37am despite the efforts of police, paramedics and a doctor who was flown to the scene by helicopter. Henry Nowak’s life mattered. He lived a good life, an honest life, and he did nothing wrong. Instead he was robbed, stabbed, and handcuffed and left to choke to death by drowning in his own blood on the pavement, by police who arrested him after his assailant lied and accused him of being a racist. There will be no riots, not even a protest over the injustice of his murder because Britain does not care. It isn’t football after all.
