Fact: Athletes on scholarship do not receive a “free” education. Anyone saying this doesn’t understand what committing 40+ hours a week to something means, in addition to your academic requirements! That is grossly inaccurate & creates a false narrative. Student-athletes work very hard for that “free” education! Yes I know many non-athlete students would love that opportunity and there are many who would switch places with them….none of that changes the fact that it’s false to say they receive “free” education.

"One of the hardest things to hear after you don't get your way is 'keep working' But, it's also only one of the solutions to be successful. Hard work pays off. No one tells you when. Not getting what you want. Keep working. You are getting what you want. Keep working." @LewisCaralla

Team culture isn’t created by time spent in the gym, by trendy drills or even by the knowledge of the coaches. It’s created by the daily actions of the entire staff. It’s created with consistency, accountability & caring that isn’t just spoken, but DEMONSTRATED every single day!

Two weeks ago, I started a mentorship program for high school, college and minor league baseball players. A few takeaways: 1. Everyone needs a listening ear. I had 50 signups in less than 24 hours and had to pause my application (it is now open again FYI). Kids are in need of adults who have "been there" and are willing to listen. Nothing more. 2. Everyone has a story. The athletes I've met range from 16 to 23 years old. Each of them is working on (or dealing with) something. Develop a better pitch. Learn a new workout routine. Deal with injuries and setbacks. Managing anxiety in everyday life. Every story is different. But every story is powerful. Listening––really listening––is a skill. I'm still developing it, but it has proven helpful so far. 3. Helping others helps yourself. This isn't why I started this program. It has just been a wonderful side effect. Getting to know some of these athletes has been a joy. The future of this world is bright. If you need mentoring: - Fill out an application online (markappel.com/apply). - I'll review and get back to you (via email). - We will set up a Zoom call and talk (if accepted). I am setting aside my Monday nights for the indefinite future to meet with high school, college and minor league baseball players while I am still in my rehab process from elbow surgery. Additionally, if you are a current pro player that has some experience and want to also mentor younger players, send me a DM and we can talk. I think there are plenty of kids out there that would benefit from your wisdom. Happy Wednesday everyone!
