@Miss_EngWM @Team_English1 We switched over a few years ago and all learners have a better grasp of the story/the outcome for Scrooge. We actually asked the learners to decide and they voted for ACC - just to give you both student and teacher perspective 😊

I'm considering switching from Jekyll and Hyde to A Christmas Carol... Has anyone done this recently? How did you find it? Positives? Negatives? I mainly want a change (I've done J&H for 5 years now) and think my current GCSE group will enjoy ACC. Thoughts? @Team_English1

@SWENGteacher @Team_English1 I'm glad to hear the resources are widespread. That's my mini job over the summer; to collect and adapt for my class. Love a bit of Jim Carey! I find not having a true film representation for J&H let's it down for those struggling with the concepts and language. Good shout!

@Miss_EngWM @Team_English1 Acc is a far superior text in terms of story, character and cultural impact. The resources available are also more widespread. The Jim Carey Disney version is a very good and faithful adaptation (with some caveats)

@Miss_EngWM @Team_English1 Go for it. There is a simplicity to thr narrative and Characterisation that is much more straightforward for students to understand, but still has the stretch and challenge in terms of social message and tracking of motifs. I did it and students thrived with it.

@Miss_EngWM @HeadofEnglish @Team_English1 We switched two years ago - depart v split about decision - waiting to see our first set of results to see if argument that it’s more accessible and therefore will yield better outcomes holds true. I so miss teaching J&H

@Anyarthomas @Team_English1 Thank you for this perspective. What is it about Jekyll and Hyde that you think enables the better quality for AO3? What about AO2? Some have mentioned the language being of better quality and purpose led in J&H compared to ACC. Thoughts? 😊

@Miss_EngWM @Team_English1 >>> How, essentially, knowledge taught lower down in school makes itself known later in the curriculum - @Counsell_C’s ‘long-term crafting of readiness’. Best of luck with it. My vote is with J&H :)

@Miss_EngWM @Sarahjeberry @Team_English1 We do J&H and although it’s 2nd most popular on spec my non-English dept SLT keep acting surprised & I reckon want us to change. I’m just not sold on ACC; I’d rather do Frank (w top set) and can’t stomach even more relentless planning and resourcing. It’s tough out there!

@stoneman_claire @Team_English1 Thank you for this honest feedback. I've found that with our LPA, we've historically scored lower for J&H and conflict poetry. I think it's due to style and overwhelming volume... So, want to experiment 🤔 What other reasons do you feel it is a trudge? (excluding 'richness')

@Miss_EngWM @Team_English1 J&H is so much richer. ACC pretty tedious by comparison. I taught J&H to LPA pupils for many years - they loved it and could understand its concepts. Now teach ACC and it’s a trudge

@Sarahjeberry @Team_English1 The length is also very appealing compared to J&H. I'm feeling very positive about my choice after some of these replies. It's only myself and one other member of staff making the swap, but it's what is best for my group! 😊

@SusanSEnglish @Team_English1 Totally understand that. I read it in two sittings and quite enjoyed it. We want a modern victorian text that allows a theme to be tracked... Are there any other recommendations? (KS3) We want to focus on: identity, isolation, inner conflict, violence, being othered, etc.

@_krogg @SusanSEnglish @Team_English1 Thank you for this. I couldn't agree more. I do have a class that I think would struggle to grasp the concepts in J&H. They absolutely loved Oliver Twist when we studied in year 8, so I have high hopes for ACC. 🤞

@SusanSEnglish @Team_English1 I agree! I feel it's time for a change. I'm excited to do some reading and planning over the summer. Question, have you taught it to a GCSE year group or lower down? If so, how did you find it? If not, what have you chosen instead? 😊

@miniteach1 @Team_English1 @teachals @SPryke2 That's my thoughts exactly. I'm hoping the style of writing, clips/films available, and the simpler story will enable my group to succeed. I can also see the connections to AIC. We have also moved to cold reads (currently cold reading AIC). Thank you - good luck in Aug🤞

@miniteach1 @Team_English1 @teachals @SPryke2 Thank you for your reply. Ah yes! I forgot there was now one for ACC. Can I ask, what made you make the swap? Was it a whole cohort or certain staff/students feedback? What was the main thing staff and students responded well to? Our plan is to have a spilt: some J&H, some ACC.
