More than 20 Kenyan doctoral students studying in Germany could face deportation after the government failed to remit millions of shillings required under a joint scholarship programme with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Official correspondence between DAAD, the National Research Fund (NRF) and the Ministry of Education shows that the programme, which currently supports 24 PhD students, has effectively collapsed after Kenya stopped paying its share of student funding in 2024. ow.ly/wwhH50YEakp

Trust me, now that Dubai is unstable, if we raided the houses of all government officials, we would probably collect enough cash to pay off half the country’s debts. The real national reserve may not even be at Central Bank, it may be sitting in living rooms, ceilings and safes

There is life beyond politics. We cannot live in a permanent political circus, recycling outrage, allegiance, and division every single day. Politics alone will never fix anything not when we refuse to fix ourselves, our systems, and our understanding. Let’s be honest: we are not electing strangers from another planet. We are electing ourselves. A politician in this country is a true reflection of a Kenyan with power and money. Every election cycle, we convince ourselves that a new group of “good” leaders will save us. Then, within months, we return to the same conversations, the same frustrations, and begin preparing to replace them again. It is an endless loop of expectation and disappointment. Why? Because we are addicted to personalities instead of systems. We rarely take time to understand how governance actually works how policies are made, how budgets are allocated, how accountability should function. Instead, we obsess over who supports who, who is winning, who is losing. That is not democracy. That is distraction. A broken democracy does not fix itself through louder debates or new faces. It is repaired through informed citizens, strong systems, and consistent accountability. If we remain trapped in this shallow, personality-driven politics, nothing will ever change no matter how many elections we hold, or how many leaders we replace. The real question is not who we elect next. It is whether we are finally ready to think, act, and demand better beyond politics.
