Seattle has to be a top 5 major US city overall and easily the most naturally beautiful in the country. I’ll defend that all day. Obv frustrating missed opportunities with waterfront development but a new public space like this is always a win.

It really is notable that contra Andreesen *all* the leaders of top AI companies — including the decidedly non-leftist Elon Musk — say their work will generate massive disemployment. They may be wrong but it’s not a “doomer” take, it’s what AI bulls think!

Hard to overstate how many people said this wasn't possible. It didn't happen by accident. This was intentional, smart industrial policy executed through public investment, industry protection, and demand pull measures executed by the Biden Administration.

The U.S. is manufacturing tons of grid batteries — so many that it’ll meet its own demand this year. canarymedia.com/articles/clean…

This is why the term totalitarian should be retired, at least in academic settings. It only really works for Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s USSR, and the Kim family’s North Korea even those systems weren’t/aren’t *truly* totalitarian

@reluctantmutant @nickisafraud @_night_brain__ I think the logic is the world is learning that ballistic missles are much more difficult to intercept than previously thought thus civilian nuclear plants are much more vulnerable. The differing risk calculation will result in more barriers to nuclear power plant construction.

Jigar is a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineering curricula (to its detriment) doesn't cover grid inertia or frequency stability — that's power systems courses as well it doesn't have any sort of training in materials energy balance math on the backend - think LFSCOE and VALCOE etc.... I think they need to modify ECE + CS + Physics + Civil Eng. to have some more materials energy balance curriculum, but alas I digress. So when he says "batteries fix it," Jigar misses the core issue. ERCOT gas peakers for example were 6 hrs/day before renewables. 14+ hrs after.

it's interesting what sinners is not about: there's no faustian bargain at a crossroads where the bluesman gets his talent in a deal with the devil, both blessing and cursing him. instead the blessing is internal to him and his culture and the curse is literally white vampiries

@loganb @MikeIsaac I disagree. AI panic has fallen into similar anti development slots that has long existed in rural small town America. People forget how cross coalitional anti fracking and pipeline politics was. Look up the Dominion Energy fights in Virginia this stuff has been ripe for awhile.

@Mkessy @MikeIsaac The AI panic is, like, one year old. Most people had no opinion on AI 18 months ago. Tech antipathy has been brewing for over a decade. I grant AI broke through to normal people, and may subsume other grievances.

this is an attractive argument for executives who are not talking to people across the country uniting to push back on some of the data center projects coming to their communities i'd argue actually talking to people rather than sneering would be a better long term approach
Logan Bowers 🏗️ 🏘️@loganb

I’m skeptical working class voters have any opinion on tech and tech bros. Look at Amazon having insane consumer support. The anti-tech slopulism is driven by an internecine grievance of educated elites getting economically outcompeted by their tech peers.

@loganb @MikeIsaac I called this out a while ago and I've been proven right. So quaint recalling the Abundance movement rollout which identified big city libs as somehow uniquely responsible for antidevelopmentalist tendencies ignoring the actual reality of the situation x.com/Mkessy/status/…

You’d think there’d be some introspection and self awareness from the people who 5 mins ago were talking “popularism” some acknowledgment that NIMBYism is not a “liberal” instinct but a broadly popular one that arises organically from societal “common sense” and wealth but 🤷🏽‍♂️

This is more evidence that current frontier models remain completely reliant on content-level memorization, as opposed to higher-level generalizable knowledge (such as metalearning knowledge, problem-solving strategies...)
Lossfunk@lossfunk

🚨 Shocking: Frontier LLMs score 85-95% on standard coding benchmarks. We gave them equivalent problems in languages they couldn't have memorized. They collapsed to 0-11%. Presenting EsoLang-Bench. Accepted to the Logical Reasoning and ICBINB workshops at ICLR 2026 🧵

@ScottSpadea @thinkingshivers This underplays the power of OP’s driving analogy. You can listen and think while driving but you’re always going to be snapped out of true concentration at some point by the fact you’re hurling through space at a high velocity. Constant task switching is demanding and unpleasant

@thinkingshivers Sometimes this causes you to redo work. Rethink trains of thought that were lost. But the second time is always better anyway. You are not losing your train of thought, you are gaining experience, practicing logic from first principles. If it was logical, you can derive it again.

Not enough people talk about how unpleasant vibecoding is. The best analogy I can think of is driving. It's cool that we can just hop in a car and drive to the store. It's a lot faster than walking. And yet, it's so stressful and infuriating, we had to invent a new word just to describe its effect on people: "road rage." AI-assisted coding is the same. It's so much faster--there's no going back to coding everything by hand, the equivalent of walking everywhere. And yet it's incredibly annoying and stressful. It's characterized by annoying delays between requests, time-wasting misunderstandings, blatant lying, and absurd overconfidence. Hopefully this gets better as models improve.

Gotta be honest: not great that paying data centers to turn off is our plan for grid reliability through 2030. A curtailment payment? Come on. This is bad! We have to stop managing the failure and build the grid we should have built in the first place. What are we doing here?!
