No one believes me when I say this, but the decline in reading is already having dire consequences for art & culture. The media you loved in your youth—shows, albums, films—was made by artists who were widely read. You will not have that quality of art in a post-literate world.

basically every form of anything has that problem, the simpsons is now written by people whose only background is in watching the simpsons, snl with snl, star wars with star wars, pop music with pop music

In the end, all I’m noticing is that people don’t like the terms “power scaling” and “world building” because they’re afraid it might make them sound nerdy, so they try and come up with words or concepts that do the exact same thing, but it sounds “more acceptable”.
News flash, you’re still a nerd.
That isn’t a bad thing.
Rather than bend over backwards trying to gain acceptance from people who will still judge you regardless, just carry on with these terms like normal.
There nothing wrong with being a nerd, there’s everything wrong with being insecure due to shallow perceptions.

Valve has asked the court to throw out the New York Attorney General’s lawsuit, citing Pokémon cards, Happy Meals, and Labubus, accusing the company of illegal gambling through Counter-Strike weapon skin “cases.”
The lawsuit claims these mystery “cases” in Counter-Strike 2 and CS:GO let players, including kids, gamble real money by paying for a chance at rare virtual items
In a 42-page filing on May 19, Valve says the “cases” do not count as gambling under New York law because players always get a random weapon skin for the money they pay, just like buying sealed packs of baseball cards, Pokémon cards, or the toy in a cereal box.
The company says there is no “stake” or chance of losing money, as it is just the surprise element common in collectibles.
Valve warns that the Attorney General’s idea could make normal activities illegal, such as parents buying trading cards for their kids or families playing arcade games. The filing notes that these loot boxes have been sold for over ten years without objection from any other U.S. state.
Valve wants the court to dismiss the whole case “with prejudice.” If denied, the lawsuit seeks triple damages on billions of dollars Valve made, plus an order to stop sales to New York residents.

@LostTman1093 @SheevTalks Most powerscaling isn't done with deliberation. Like how some people do color theory without thinking about it. I know it's about racism, but you cannot escape power structures.
English

@Mode_Change @SheevTalks It works because it was a real thing that was happing.
It was a period piece discussing real world issues.
Harper Lee did not think anything about powerscaling, she wrote about racism
English

This narrative falls apart because powerscaling is not a “hobby” of mine. I don’t regularly frequent Death Battle forums or whatever. I only use it when it becomes relevant to the narrative being discussed, which is why it’s self-evident that powerscaling IS narratively relevant

I think the "powerscaling is important for literary analysis" topic is just dumb people trying to pretend their hobby as something way more intellectual and important than it is. You don't need "powerscaling" to talk about the internal logic of a story or its consistency.
English

@LostTman1093 @SheevTalks I know what the book is about, that aspect the book works because Boo isn't described ever described as or implied to be weak. Him being black is the main point but it's not the only aspect of his character.
English

@Mode_Change @SheevTalks That's not powerscaling.
That's characterization and it's a blatant example of racism.
You know, what the book is about
English

@LostTman1093 @SheevTalks For most of the book, Boo is described as having an menacing presence. So the shock of him killing Robert wasn't necessarily whether or not he was strong enough to do it, but his personality not being what the townsfolk thought.
English

@SheevTalks What's the power scalling in to kill a mockingbird?
English

@FunfactsSp39773 @SheevTalks Have you considered that people don't want to loquacious on a website that doesn't allow more than 200 words per post?
English

@SheevTalks powerscaling isn't a serious academic term to analyse narrative art with. if you want to create serious analysis that people take seriously then why not use serious terminology and maybe also talk about actual serious work beyond pop culture slop that you don't even like.

@butter_mania @fortayee Powerscaling is commonly done in-universe as often as cross-verse powerscaling.
This discourse started because someone argued that in-verse powerscaling is a narrative tool. And I personally agree.
English

@fortayee its because of the clash of different medias which were never meant to be compared
thematically one would be weaker and go all out to defeat the other, but it just ends up as one no-diffing the other
its feats over substance most of the time, which isnt BAD but yknow..
