@PhDVoice I’m Dan Can a machine listen to something coming from two speakers then make it sound like you were actually there by using lots of speakers.

@SW_Help I’m on what looks to be a very busy 2000 service from London Waterloo to Weymouth and the amount of people with bags on seats (in some cases taking up whole tables) is ridiculous. Any chance the guard can make an announcement?

@SW_Help Okay - can you then confirm I’m able to get a taxi from Basingstoke to Southampton central and claim it back?

@Molem7b5 Hi Daniel, you will need to speak with the station staff about the replacement buses; hopefully by the time you arrive at Basingstoke there will be less disruption ^MC

I wonder what the Venn diagram is of people comparing tube staff salaries to Drs, nurses, teachers, academics etc. and people who also complain when any of those professions strike for better pay and conditions.

@ADodson80 @RMTunion I should also note that in some universities lecturer starting salaries are also around the mid-30s for early career academics. Again, massively underpaid.

@ADodson80 @RMTunion PhD earnings vary massively depending on the job/sector they end up working afterwards. If anything, the fact that starting salaries for postdoctoral researchers in UK academia is around the mid-£30ks just shows we are poorly paid, not that tube staff are over paid.

We care deeply, Kirsty. Our members assist 5 million passengers every day. They don't want to inconvenience anybody but sadly TfL walked out of talks that could have averted this action last Wednesday, and have not returned.
Kirstie Allsopp@KirstieMAllsopp

Tonight in London packed buses, dodgy looking bikes, mopeds & people just walking. Night workers heading to their shifts, others struggling to get home, knowing it will be the same tomorrow night. Does @RMTunion care at all?

@pandocruises Trying to book a holiday and none of my payments are going through? I’ve tried using two different cards. Something to do with a lack of 3DS confirmation.

@drchriscarson @caddisnet The correct answer here is that both academics and medical Drs should have salary restoration. They aren’t mutually exclusive and let’s not fall into the trap of being pitted against each other.

@caddisnet Academics don’t face prison if they make a mistake! Also if it takes you 8 years to get an honours and a PhD, then it took you too long.

@Anna_bd I would do b). If they wanted people to respond either way, they should have been explicit about it.

Right… if someone emails you and explicitly says “please let me know if this will cause a problem”, and it does not cause a problem, do you a) email them to say “this does not cause a problem” or b) not email, because they said “email if it causes a problem” and it does not.

🚨 Open to New Opportunities🚨 Due to a company restructure/downsizing of the R&D team, I have sadly been made redundant. I’m looking for positions where I can bring my skills in Audio DSP, ML, and Spatial Audio. I am open to positions in both industry and academia.

Within a week of getting our Section 21 notice we’ve managed to find and sign a tenancy agreement for a new house. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll be booking moving vans etc….just in time for me to swan off to DAFx for the week.

back to school this week and back to reminding people that one of the coolest things my advisor did was write a course on how to build PyTorch from scratch if you want to become an expert on deep learning, can't think of a much better place to start than MiniTorch:

@vanessainstem During my PhD I tended to try and treat it like a 40 hour a week job, with crunch time for deadlines. Id also try and not work weekends unless I really had to.

Actually genuinely curious how many of my friends took weekends off while PhDing? I lean toward 1 day per week instead of 2 days but it depends on my energy/workload and I usually try to take a weekday off instead but usually have a late-start on weekends

Grad Students: Classes are starting. Make a calendar NOW for Sundays. So when other students ask you to go hike or brunch, just laugh and walk away. You’re here to work. You’re here to study. Make friends and dialogue with texts, with theorists, with ideas. Forget the rest.

Excited to publish a Python package that turns @karpathy's "A Recipe for Training Neural Networks" into easy-to-use diagnostics code! 🔧 No more randomly poking around in your custom @PyTorch DNN to debug it. Get simple diagnostics for your neural nets 🫶 #PyTorch 1/
