@trevposts Demonstrating you are worse at math than an LLM isn’t a convincing argument that LLMs are good at math. It’s simply an embarrassing thing for you to brag about.

I did the math a couple weeks ago and it turns out a vegan prompting a frontier LLM *every second, 24/7* consumes less water than the average omnivore who never uses AI.
mary@theoceanblooms

people are trying to argue with this and it’s literally the truth. a kilogram of beef requires over 15,000 litres of water to produce. a vegan who uses chatgpt every day is living a more sustainable lifestyle than someone who regularly eats beef while boycotting AI.

@Legal_Fil Billy is a dishonest actor who propagandizes for infinity immigration. He’s obfuscating the facts intentionally for exactly the reasons you are concerned about.

We shouldn’t pretend that this is due to congressional incompetence. Democrats have decided to hold passengers hostage to satisfy their anti-ICE ideologues. Obfuscating that fact only helps people consciously hurting Americans.
Billy Binion@billybinion

I’ve never seen anything like this. This is the New Orleans airport. The line begins far before I started filming. Everyone around me is expecting to miss their flights. All because Congress can’t figure out how to do its job.

Because the USA is denominated in miles. There are 640 acres in a square mile. 640 can be divided by 2 easily. A square half mile is 160 acres, a square 1/4 mile is 40 acres, a square 1/8 mile is 10 acres. Nobody in America knows what a kilometer is, let alone a hectare
Simon Kuestenmacher@simongerman600

Not coming from an agricultural background, some measurements don’t make intuitive sense to me. A Hectares are easy enough to come to terms with: 10,000 square meters. Easy. An acre?! I still can’t wrap my head around this…

@cremieuxrecueil A bachelors degree from anywhere ticks the box of the educational requirement present on the job description for any roles where the actual hiring manager is interested in skills/experience and only views the educational requirements as a constraint put on them in hiring.

Despite their reputation, community college bachelor's degrees aren't associated with that much worse earnings premiums than normal bachelor's degrees, and they seem much better than associate's degrees.

@HistoryBoomer The real world isn’t your high school stats class assignment that flattened all variables to make learning the basic concepts simpler. Lots of people don’t understand that and overestimate the importance of crime rate in comparing dissimilar situations, but people are often dumb.

Yes, lots of people care more about total crime than relative crime, but that's because people are often dumb (even smart people). Per capita crime is the important stat. And no, I don't worry on the subway. ("Robot boy" huh? I prefer "Spock," but Robot Boy has some charm.)

@HistoryBoomer Being a midwit means being smart enough to understand concepts of statistics while also not being smart enough to understand how those concepts do and don’t apply in the context of the world. Being a narcissist means posting this midwittery proudly in public.

For the statistically illiterate. A million people in a state with 50 murders every year, your murder rate is 50 per million. Add a million immigrants who do 1 murder a year, total murders goes up to 51, but that's among TWO million people. Your rate is 25.5 per million. The number of murders goes up, but each person in the city is actually safer. More murders does not automatically mean more danger. Population size matters. If we kidnapped the entire population of Japan and brought them to America, our number of murders would go up (Japanese people commit about 250 murders a year), but we'd become a much safer country (the Japanese murder RATE is far lower). Oilfield Rando's argument (more murders automatically means more danger) is bad math.
Oilfield Rando@Oilfield_Rando

David’s argument is that bringing foreigners here (some of whom commit crimes) will make it less likely for American criminals to commit crimes. Foreigners can only supplement US crime. Not reduce it. David is a shameless, despicable ideological prostitute.

@HistoryBoomer A small village with 1 murder is essentially guaranteed that murder was amongst known individuals, most likely a domestic dispute. As it is not a random crime against strangers, the risk represented is zero regardless of the drastic per capita appearance. You’re proving ignorant.

Total crime is more important than per capita??? You live in a village with 1 murder a year. I live in a city with 300 murders a year. But my city has 8 million people and your village has 20 people. If I were you, I’d be scared. Per capita is more important.
Jon Snow@JonSnow50616798

@HistoryBoomer Bad way of looking at it, because total crime is a more important stat than per capita crime.

A big part of “cities are awful” discourse is some people are more scared by rough areas than others. I was in NYC in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I saw real crime. I am less easily scared than Coddled clearly is. This doesn’t mean crime isn’t bad, it’s just not as bad as they claim.
Coddled Affluent Professional@feelsdesperate

Paris, London, and Rome all have problems. All of them have neighborhoods that aren’t culturally and economically integrated and that have high crime rates where Carl would ‘feel scared’ if he decided to visit. Do these neighborhoods tend to be more peripheral than central than in the US? Yes, but so what?

@MrEwanMorrison There is a psychological factor of tech founders risk taking that often comes from lacking the survival tactics of introspection and understanding consequences. You only know of the few who essentially won the lottery and not the many more who failed epically on their gambles.
