@AlboMP Reshuffling the deck chairs on the titanic... house prices aren't going to come down until the market is amply supplied. This can't be solved without addressing NIMBYism and development red tape.

@river_is_nice She's actually correct here though... sure it's possible for companies to obtain high market shares but you realistically can't stop someone creating a competing product. True monopolies are mythical, even say Microsoft in the 90s still had alternatives in Mac, Beos, Linux etc.

Ayn Rand never understood capitalism as it actually exists and so she created this fantasy version of it wherein all the downsides or contradictions were actually a byproduct of “statism” or “collectivism” as opposed to the market itself —- imo it was because she resented the soviets so much, she didn’t didn’t want to admit Marx was right about *anything* including a lot of observations he made about how Capitalism works that are now regarded completely mainstream, even among non-Marxists.

@romanhelmetguy Also you are misunderstanding the libertarian position. Libertarianism is not anarchism, a strong government is desired. Libertarians want a strong government that is limited to essentials, ie criminal law enforcement, defence, and is legally barred from economic participation.

This is her dumbest take. Monopolies form naturally. Monopolies are much more profitable than competitive industries. So if you find yourself in a competitive industry, it makes sense to buy out or collude with all your competitors, or to temporarily take a loss in order to drive them out of business. The government itself is a naturally-forming monopoly on violence. Ayn Rand is frequently guilty of this kind of magical thinking in which everything would be perfect if the government just disappeared. Well, there are still large parts of Africa today in which there is effectively no government. Is it utopia? Meanwhile the Industrial Revolution could not have taken place without the financial incentives put in place by intellectual property law such as patents, which require an incredibly strong government to enforce. The right really needs to get away from this whole “everything the government does is bad” loser mindset.

@romanhelmetguy Monopiles in reality are extremely rare - It's actually not easy to stop someone from creating a competitor product. Even consider an example today, nVidia, they have a 90% share but are certainly not a monopoly, alternatives from AMD and Intel exist.

@smarkreilly "public transit that comes so regularly I don't need to check a schedule" Such public transit system is impossible to structure and finance. It does not exist anywhere in the world.

I don't want self driving cars. I want boring things like public transit that comes so regularly I don't need to check a schedule. I want bike lanes so accessible it's preferable to Uber. I want a city that's not built around cars-as-default.

@BiatchDulce These are colloquial definitions... but generally speaking socialism refers to public ownership of means of product, meaning that it essentially is a phase of communism.

@feeonline The problem with this is that we have politicians willing to propose a UBI, but none as a tax reform replacing existing income tax, and none as a replacement for all other welfare systems. No politician has the balls to do this so you will get a terrible watered down version.

Most people do not realize just how much they should hate the rich. Since 2008 the richest 1% have Quadrupled their wealth. While the other 99% have stayed the same or gotten poorer. YOU should be twice as rich as in 2008, but they have taken it ALL.

@JohnnyFocal Who exactly is being exploited? Employees have voluntarily agreed to work to the pay offered. Customers have voted with their wallets on prices not increasing for higher wages. The results is the net result of voluntarily mutual agreements between all involved.

To be honest, you don't actually have a business. You have a business based on exploitation, which means your business model is neither sound nor ethical.
Peter McCormack 🏴‍☠️🇬🇧🇮🇪@PeterMcCormack

A minimum wage of £15 would end my coffee shop, it would have to close, as would many other businesses. I’ll explain for the economically illiterate. Staff costs are currently half our costs, a £15 minimum wage is actually more than £15 an hour for the company, because you have to add: - 12.07% holiday - Sick pay - Maternity pay if and when required - National insurance - Pension contributions These costs would mean the shop loses money because remember, energy costs are up, rates are up, regulations are up. Now you can pass these costs onto the consumer - that would mean charging a lot more for coffee, people won’t pay it. The likes of Starbucks and Costa can, because they have economies of scale. The independent doesn’t. Now the little socialist will say well this is your fault, if you can’t run a business that can afford to pay its staff properly, but the little socialist has never run a business and does not understand the dynamics. Now I could pay some staff off and fill those hours myself or reduce us to one staff member during certain periods - but this proves the point that a minimum wage costs jobs. There was a time when these jobs were done by kids, perhaps on the weekend, paid a lower wage, no holiday and no silly employment rights. Perhaps they were even paid cash. The dynamic worked and small businesses like this could operate. It was also a great first job. Sadly now it isn’t worth employing entitlement youngsters at this level of pay. So alas, I don’t need the stress, the business would close, a number of jobs would be lost. Economics is about understanding these dynamics, no vibes. The cost of living is not solved through passing on inflation to the business, it is solved by ending high inflation and creating prosperity. This is what socialists don’t understand, they can’t create prosperity, they can only destroy it.
