1yr ago… WHEN will gov take food security seriously? It’s actually ridiculous given geopolitical mess we’re in. Oh Tesco will sort it out🙄 Tesco-empty shelves during Covid. Tesco-empty shelves when Russia invaded Ukraine Tesco-empty shelves with ⬇️ shocks than either of above

Spoke about the impact of the current oil price issue today on farmers. Off the back of two difficult years, inheritance tax, BPS slashing, SFI debacle and its future restrictions, now facing skyrocketing fuel and fertiliser costs, the outlook isn’t great. A robust food security policy would be a start, but the Government’s last approach was that if we need more food we can always import it. Shocking complacency. How do rising oil prices impact your business? If food prices rise, will any of that reach the farm gate?

These species aren’t under pressure from shooting, they’re under pressure from development and water pollution, yet again shooting is being used as a scapegoat
Defra UK@DefraGovUK

Wild bird populations like pochard, goldeneye, pintail and woodcock are under pressure. We're planning to consult on new measures to strengthen their protection against shooting and support their recovery. Find out more: gov.uk/government/new…

'Could rise' in relation to energy and fertiliser costs perhaps should read 'should rise' if cost adjustments actually reach back to growers following the spike in growing costs. Will it? @BBCBreakfast @TheGrocer
BBC Breakfast@BBCBreakfast

The National Farmers' Union has warned that food prices in the UK are likely to go up as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. NFU president Tom Bradshaw told #BBCBreakfast that the price of cucumbers and tomatoes could rise over the next six weeks bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Clarkson has done more for farming and rural communities in the last few years than gov & DEFRA have done in a century. Let’s be honest, with gov of any colour, in farming it’s a case of picking who’s going to dump the least 💩 on your doorstep 2/2

It’s not rocket science @RachelReevesMP @UKLabour. Cut fuel duty & cut VAT in line with Europe. Keep inflation low & give consumer spending confidence. Let people keep more of their hard earned money. What am I missing & why won’t this government make bold moves? #CutVat

You can’t grow food on unaffordable inputs. Wake up @UKLabour this consultation is too late, we are applying fertiliser now !!! Government ministers need to be experts in their field, not career politicians @angelaeagle you are letting down our industry.
Clive Bailye@TWBFarms

It took a war in Iran for Labour to realise they shut down domestic nitrogen production. Farmers are applying fertiliser now, not in 8 weeks. Only immediate, urgent action by the government will change how much food we have 12 months from now. #FoodSecurity #FarmingCrisis #UKAgriculture #NetZero #LabourFail #FoodSecurityIsNationalSecurity gov.uk/government/new…

⏰ Today, @SteveReedMP says we must prepare for food shortages. But in the High Court last week, Treasury lawyers argued there was “no good reason” to delay or consult further on IHT affecting farms, citing the need for flexibility to protect public finances and avoid delaying revenue. You can’t weaken food production and call it resilience.

🔥 Natural England's wildfire messaging has a credibility problem - and one of its own evidence authors is the source. In September 2025, Natural England's Chief Scientist described rewetting peat as a long-term solution to wildfire risk. But a named author of NEER155 - the evidence review Defra relied on to tighten burning restrictions - has now publicly conceded that rewetting does not prevent wildfire. It only reduces severity. That is a significant narrowing of the claim. 📊 What rewetting actually achieves, according to Natural England's own case studies, is slowing fire spread and lowering flame height enough for crews to intervene. Useful - but not prevention. 🚒 Meanwhile, Defra's 2025 changes extended restrictions across all upland deep peat and lowered the peat threshold from 40cm to 30cm. Prescribed burning is now permitted only in exceptional circumstances. The Climate Change Committee warns wildfire conditions are growing more likely and more extreme. If rewetting is not prevention and burning is barely available, Ministers must answer a straightforward question: what exactly is England's wildfire strategy now? The Peat Action Plan needs rewriting. The evidence demands it. 🌐 Find out more on our website.
