We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport's greatest and fiercest drivers. He was 41 years old. We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.

I read the nonsense like this and realize just how pathetically soft people have become. I’ve spent almost 45 years not just watching racing but professionally involved and successful as ,at different times, a team owner, driver, crew cheif, spotter, engineer, mechanic, designer, fabricator, pit crew member, driving instructor & coach, and of course enthusiast and spectator. I’ve avidly followed F1 since the early 80’s. Nothing has changed except the fans have become pathetic whiners. So rather than further waste my time factually refuting such utter nonsense I let Grok do so for me. The claim that "it was illegal to force a driver off-track" in earlier F1 eras, and that current rules made it newly "common" (thus "killing" wheel-to-wheel racing), is factually inaccurate. bbc.com/sport/formula1… Historical Context of "Forcing Off Track" - Forcing a rival off the track has long been restricted, not newly permitted. The FIA Sporting Regulations (e.g., pre-2022 versions) explicitly prohibited "manoeuvres liable to hinder other drivers, such as deliberate crowding of a car beyond the edge of the track or any other abnormal change of direction." This rule (often Article 20.3 or similar) has existed for years. - Incidents of aggressive defending or divebombs leading to contact/off-track excursions happened frequently in past decades (e.g., 1990s-2010s battles involving Senna, Prost, Schumacher, etc.). Enforcement was often subjective and inconsistent, depending on stewards, which led to complaints of bias. 2022 Guidelines Clarification (Not a Permission Slip) - The 2022 Driving Standards Guidelines (introduced after driver requests for clarity post-2021 controversies) aimed to reduce ambiguity, not relax standards. They formalized expectations for apex priority, overlap, and when a move is "sustained" enough for space to be left. - Key principle (consistent with prior rules): The overtaking car must be alongside/established with significant overlap; the defender cannot "force" the other off if that happens. But if the attacker isn't fully alongside or leaves insufficient space, contact or running wide can occur without automatic penalty. This balances attack/defense based on a century of racing dynamics—not a new invention allowing pushes. the-race.com/formula-1/four… - Result: More consistent stewarding, not more forcing. Pre-2022, the same physics applied; calls varied more by race director/stewards. The Sainz-Verstappen Incident - This was a midfield dive bomb on lap 1 (Miami 2026 context), where Verstappen went up the inside aggressively. Sainz called it "borderline" and said he was pushed off, but it aligned with how such moves are judged under overlap rules—no penalty issued. - Aggressive inside moves forcing the outside car wide have always been part of racing when the attacker carries speed/position. Sainz's complaint reflects frustration, not a rule change enabling it. Verstappen called the midfield a "jungle"—standard hard racing. Impact on Racing - Wheel-to-wheel action has not been "killed." The 2022 technical regs (ground effect focus) were explicitly designed to **improve following and overtaking** by reducing dirty air—widely credited with better racing in 2022-2025. - Nostalgia for "older times" ignores that pre-2022 enforcement was patchier, and dangerous moves were penalized variably. Current guidelines prioritize skill/racecraft/machinery over steward whim. In short: The rules evolved for consistency, not to legalize pushing people off. Forcing off-track was never freely "illegal" in a blanket sense nor newly allowed—physics, overlap, and steward judgment have always governed it. The poster's view confuses clarification with liberalization. Hard racing persists; subjectivity decreased.

@MMA_PROS_PICK_ I've been watching the UFC since the days of Shamrock and Royce, and Kamaru is exactly right. It's unheard of to hand the belt over to someone who fought in retreat mode like Sean did.

🚨Kamaru Usman doesn’t understand how Khamzat Chimaev lost the fight "When one guy is constantly marching forward, throwing jabs, mixing in overhands, getting takedowns, and doing that for almost five rounds, I don’t see how he loses the fight. The other guy was backing up and jabbing the whole time." via: @pound4poundshow

Henry Cejudo thought that Khamzat Chimaev won the fight 🤔 "I thought Khamzat Chimaev actually won this fight. And again, I was rooting for Sean Strickland. Khamzat made the mistake when he went for the takedown [ In the second round ]. Once you get hurt and start shooting for takedowns, bro, that’s not good. It could’ve gone 4-1 Chimaev or maybe 3-2 Chimaev. via: @pound4poundshow

The apex emphasis evolved from practical racing norms (common across motorsport) but became more explicit and consistently enforced with the 2022 guidelines to reduce ambiguity after incidents in prior seasons. So the only thing that actually changed in motorsports was the elimination of ambiguity preventing subjectivity and bias in making calls. The principles have been the same as long as there’s been wheel to wheel racing. The overwhelming issue is those having only experience driving on motorways well below the limits of their vehicles have little understanding of the innate and inherent driving dynamics at play in wheel to wheel contests at the edge of grip. Attempting to apply standards drawn from experiences on the motorway well below the limits of a vehicle is pure foley. The current unambiguous regulations recognize and understand the unique dynamics involved in attack and defense balancing the limitation placed on both. In other words though you may not agree the regulations are as they are in recognition of and as a result of the preceding century of motorsport. Instead of declaring them wrong seek understanding as to why they’re actually correct. Any potential change one can envision tips the balance of fairness to either attacker or defender. As the regulations are now drivers of equal skill and race craft in equal machinery are rendered equal in ability to attack and defend. The success of a potential challenge or defense of a challenge under the current regulations is decided solely by an advantage or deficiency in skill, race craft, or machinery not an inequity in the regulations.
