Speaking after the ruling, Kato Tumusiime, the defence lawyer, protested the sentence and announced plans to challenge it in the High Court. He argues that the decision is intended to silence freedom of expression and speech in Uganda. The activists, operating under their umbrella group "Rooted in Resistance", formerly "Students Against EACOP Uganda",have been on remand since August 1, 2025. They were arrested while marching to Stanbic Bank’s headquarters in Kampala to protest activities linked to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).
