Refugee sector people…. We at @IMIX_UK are gathering some do’s and dont’s when reporting on migration issues. What makes you recoil in horror? Certain language/ images? What would you like to see more coverage of? Please comment and share #RefugeesWelcome 🧡🧡🧡

I am one of the “herders” you are referring to @Nigel_Farage. I arrived in the UK without any knowledge of the English language, yet through determination and sustained effort, I earned both a BEng & MEng in Engineering. My hard-work was recognised with a Student of the Year award @covcampus, I also obtained a Diploma in Business and IT, as well as participation in several leadership programmes, including @ParliaMentors at the @UKParliament mentored by @LaylaMoran. I now contribute back to society by leading an organisation that supports refugees in settling, gaining employment, and accessing the guidance and opportunities that were never available to me when I first arrived. It is important to reflect on why “young brilliant people are leaving the country?”. One contributing factor is the perception of a Britain shaped by leadership and rhetoric that some view as exclusionary, intolerant, and lacking in openness. Such an environment risks discouraging both current and future generations from seeing the country as a place where they can thrive and feel valued. Food for thought @Nigel_Farage @reformparty_uk

I moved to the country recently, I was pottering in my garden this afternoon, someone approached me & said 'not sure we want people like you in our village', she had read the article below about a part of my life. As if survivors need permission to live! Truly ludicrous opinion.

In many years of campaigning for Labour across different constituencies, rural and urban areas, diverse and less diverse areas… I have heard a lot on migration. Many of the reforms will have support in a plurality of voters. But I’ve never heard anyone saying, for example, bankers should be able to settle in this county five times quicker than care workers. Or that it’s ok for a couple and their children to be on totally different routes to settlement. Two issues that will move more “moderates” towards the “left” critique of migration reforms - changing rules for people who already made their home in the UK, and impact on children (especially on child poverty). Why? Because both these issues are about fairness - not changing rules after the game started, and not punishing people who are where they are with no fault of their own.

@LukeTryl But they are not really introducing new safe routes at any scale. Community resettlement is a brilliant concept but very limited in terms of who will be welcome and numbers.

In fact ask the public whether the priority should be new legal routes or greater enforcement and border control and most opt for both - which is why the govts approach of combining a tougher approach with more ways to help those in need aligns with median public expectations.

🧵Reading Mahmood's Op-Ed on migration reform, for all of the debate it does sit fairly squarely in mainstream of what public inc Lab 2024 voters want. Our research identifies 5Cs the public expect on migration: 1. Control 2. Compassion 3. Contribution 4. Competence 5. Community

NEW: Labour MP Tony Vaughan has co-ordinated a private letter to the Home Secretary, which has been signed by 100 Labour MPs, expressing concerns about the plans He says Govt plans undermine the government’s integration and cohesion objectives - he is concerned about refugee status becoming temporary even after 20 years of lawful residence, says that the proposals "risk worsening child poverty", unfairly shifting settlement “goalposts”, and would "harm the UK’s economic competitiveness by exacerbating skills shortages" Tony Vaughan says: "We can change our immigration system for the better without forgetting who we are as a Labour Party. You don’t win back public confidence in the asylum system by threatening to forcibly remove refugees who have lived here lawfully for 15 or 20 years. That just breeds insecurity and fractured communities."
