Key Historical ContextWenela/Wits Native Labour Association (WNLA): Established to centralize and manage the supply of black workers from southern Africa. Migrant Labour System: The system was designed to keep labour cheap, forcing men to work far from home in harsh conditions. Industrialization: The influx of this labour, combined with British capital and European expertise, led to rapid urban development on the Witwatersrand. The Southern African Customs Union (SACU) consists of five member states: Botswana, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa. Established in 1910, it is the world's oldest customs union and focuses on economic integration and free movement of goods among its members.
