You can make pre-internship exams mandatory and test young doctors on advanced investigations, evidence-based management, emergency response protocols, and international standards of care. Then after all that, they walk into hospitals where gloves run out, oxygen is unreliable, reagents are missing, scans are inaccessible, and essential drugs are inconsistent. At that point, medicine stops being about practicing what you were taught and becomes improvisation and survival. A healthcare system cannot demand excellence while failing to provide the basic tools required to deliver it.

@DailyMonitor How did the court conclude whether the herbal medicine doesn't cure HIV/AIDS before convicting them. How do you convict someone for selling fake herbal medicine and then hand over to NDA for analysis? What if it comes out that the herbs actually cure AIDS?

UPDATE: The Masaka Magistrate’s Court has convicted two Rwandan nationals for spreading misleading information about HIV/AIDS. Festo Katanye Mugabe, 37, from Kanombe, Nyarugunga in Kigali, and Nathan Karamuzi Kadogo, 28, of Kalwazi Cell in Kyotera District, pleaded guilty before Grade One Magistrate Abdallah Kayiza. Prosecution said the duo sold herbal medicine at Golf Lane Hotel in Masaka on April 30, 2026, charging Shs150,000-300,000 and falsely claiming it could cure HIV/AIDS. They were charged under Section 45(3) of the HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act. The court has sentenced each to three years in prison or a fine of Shs300,000, noting their guilty plea. The herbal medicine was handed to the National Drug Authority for analysis. #MonitorUpdates 📹: Gertrude Mutyaba

Hot take: In medical practice, we assume every woman that comes into the hospital sick is PREGNANT until proven otherwise.

Dear Faridah, let’s not downplay the need for accountability. Mysterious deaths, by any account, would elicit questions. Save for Protected Health Information, medical officers are obliged to offer, at least the basic minimum details of what exactly happened. We risk allowing casualness into medical practice if we don’t demand standards. That hospital would be a crime scene under normal circumstances.
Faridah Nakazibwe@fsnakazibwe

For those who expected more details from the hospital, it will be for the family, not us, online in-laws. Once again....Less is More 👌

Dear Ugandans, As an Assistant lecturer who has trained and continue to train Medical students “your future Doctors.” It is very important to learn that the world continues to evolve. Gone are the days when age was directly linked to competence. It has become very unpleasant for some of you to continue disrespecting the very dedicated young professionals by the virtue of their young age. We understand that in the past generations, Medics were completing their 1st professional training in their 30’s or even 40’s but today, the current generation is completing their first degrees in their early twenty, Specializing before 30 and this is the reason we currently have those completing PhD in their thirties even before 40 years. We have very competent Medics below 30 years and you must trust them. Kindly stop use of Demeaning words like “Akasawo” “Obusawo” “Ka Nurse” “Ka Doctor” “Ka Nurse Kali kekankozeko” as this may create a toxic environment that may indirectly interfere with their line of duty since they are humans and they get emotional. As we continue to inform & teach the young professionals to have ultimate respect for their patients, the patients MUST equally respect the dignity of the people who give in all they can to save their lives. These are the people who restore your hope, your life when you have given up. We must get used that in today’s generation, the Medics might look younger than we expect but it doesn’t mean that they are not fit for their Duty. They have been well trained and they are licensed to do what they know best. They need your trust to perform to their best. NB: To the young Medics, build that confidence in yourselves, stay professional and prove those who doubt your competences. Thank you.

@Dr_Chris_Twine I've ever allowed a medical student to cannulate me. I knew it was the first, but I knew they had to have a first. There's nothing wrong with medical students learning on patients, as long as they're being supervised.
