Let’s jump in… South Bridge Underground Vaults, Edinburgh, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The South Bridge Underground Vaults sit right under the South Bridge in Edinburgh’s Old Town. They were built in the late 1700s as storage space and workshops when the bridge was put up, but things went downhill fast. By the early 1800s the vaults had turned into overcrowded slums where the poorest lived, worked and sometimes died in the dark. The conditions down there were grim. No proper light or fresh air, damp walls, and stories of crime, disease and desperation. People talk about how the vaults became a hiding place for all sorts of dodgy activities, and some say the misery of that time never really left. A dark corner of Edinburgh’s history with plenty of stories that still make the hairs on your neck stand up. If you ever go on one of the tours, keep your ears open. One of the best known spirits is Mr Boots. He’s described as a tall, aggressive figure in old-fashioned boots who stomps around the tunnels making heavy footsteps. Tour guides and visitors have reported him kicking people or blocking their way, and people reckon he might have been a slumlord or even a body snatcher in his life. Even now, people say you can hear him walking about when the vaults are empty.

The Sameer Project doctor and nurses saw and treated 196 patients in a single day, far more than the 80 expected! They were suffering from chickenpox, infected wounds, scabies, fungal infections, skin allergies, skin infections, eczema, and burns. These conditions are becoming increasingly common as living conditions deteriorate, especially in crowded tents and shelters where basic hygiene is difficult to maintain. Alongside medical consultations and treatment, hygiene kits were distributed containing soap, shampoo, detergent, and sponges - simple but essential items to help reduce infection and prevent further spread of disease.
