By evicting those that live in tent encampments, the city is violating their right to liberty. Being evicted from your home, whether it be a tent encampment or a building, goes against what Locke says are the people’s natural rights. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

In section 7 of the CRF, it is stated that each individual is entitled to life, liberty and security of the person. Liberty in this case means the freedoms to make choices and move without any physical restraint. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

Removing by-laws 101, 102, and 103 would result in chaos. There would be citizens abusing the new lack of authority. I believe that these by-laws need to be changed to suit the needs of those that are struggling and are in desperate need of housing. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

During the trucker’s convoy, citizens were camped in parks (illegally). The city did not rush to remove them. They too were breaking the law as they occupied a space that “wasn’t their’s” and so we must ask, why are we in such a rush to remove the 1/2 @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

The City of Toronto spent close to $2M to remove three encampments in Trinity Bellwoods Park, Alexandra Park, and Lamport Stadium. The effort and money put in to make this happen proves the lengths the city is willing 1/2 #OJENROEJSP22 @OJEN_ROEJ thestar.com/amp/news/gta/2…

The homeless face a concerning amount of stereotypes and judgment for something that they fell into, something they would rather not be. It is up to the city to care for them and support them, and by evicting them, they are doing the opposite of their job @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

and abusive. It shows that the system does not care for its citizens, does not care for the people it was put in place to protect and assist. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

As a society, it is our duty to take care of those surrounding us. After all, we all could use help from time to time. However, pushing people out of their shelter and leaving them with no where to go is creating a worse problem for them. 1/? @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

incredibly common. Also, they have recently been known as hotspots for COVID-19, putting high-risk individuals in even more danger. Until the city can provide people that rely on tent encampments with suitable housing, I believe evicting them is cruel 3/? @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

When these people are removed from their shelters, they are left with no where to go. Homeless shelters are not as much help as we make them out to be, especially during this pandemic. They are overcrowded, understaffed, and stories of discrimination 2/?@OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

Evicting those who live in tent encampments is simply solving a problem by creating a problem. Question such as “Where will these people go?” are so often overlooked. We cannot remove people from what home they have and leave them with nothing. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

@HradyBargreaves @OJEN_ROEJ Evictions are often dehumanizing. People are removed from where they reside and their belongings are ripped away from them. Such an action is not treating someone with dignity and/or respect, especially considering their situations. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

@Musheerah13 @OJEN_ROEJ And how does evicting homeless people infringe on their section 15 rights? Our laws are meant to be unbiased and aren’t directly attempting to discriminate against homeless people. Our bylaws in place state that no one is allowed to encamp public spaces whether displaced or not.

By evicting those who live in tent encampments, the city is violating section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The homeless population has a large percentage of people with physical and/or mental disabilities. 1/2 #OJENROEJSP22 @OJEN_ROEJ

@HradyBargreaves @OJEN_ROEJ Section 15 of the Charter states that every individual must be treated with dignity and respect. People are homeless for countless reasons. Physical/mental disabilities, financial situations and family situation are just a few. 1/2 #OJENROEJSP22 @OJEN_ROEJ

@vlu1907 @OJEN_ROEJ @ProvostLaw Tent encampments are the only option for those living in them. Although unsanitary, they provide shelter during bad weather etc. If the city were to provide citizens with cleaner, safer shelters, I’m sure the issue we are arguing would not exist @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

I believe the city should not have the ability to evict those living in tent encampments. The law should be changed. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22

@vlu1907 @Musheerah13 @OJEN_ROEJ @ProvostLaw I believe encampments could create a sense of community for the homeless as there are other people going through the same problem. I believe it is not dangerous but more how it makes other people feel in the surrounding area.

Police have proven in the past that they have a bias against those with disabilities and have proven this fact with the aggression and force they use. Section 15 is being violated as people are not being with an equal amount of respect or dignity. @OJEN_ROEJ #OJENROEJSP22
