Allowing an individual affiliated with Somalia access to the port of Berbera represents failure: a catastrophic security failure and a serious political failure.
From a security standpoint, this is indefensible. Berbera Port is not a commercial backstreet; it is a strategic national asset, central to the country’s economy, trade routes and long term sovereignty. Granting access to someone linked to a hostile state that openly contests Somaliland’s existence exposes critical infrastructure to surveillance, intelligence gathering and sabotage. That is not oversight, it is negligence.
Politically, this decision signals weakness. It blurs the clear and deliberate separation between the Republic of Somaliland and Somalia, undermining our long held position as a de facto and de jure independent state. When officials allow representatives or affiliates of a hostile state into our most sensitive spaces, they legitimise interference and invite further intrusion.
This is not engagement. This is not diplomacy. This is infiltration enabled by poor judgement. What is taking place is espionage and intelligence collection, facilitated by those who should know better.
A state that takes its sovereignty seriously does not gamble with its lifelines. Berbera port must be protected through strict vetting, firm policy and zero tolerance for security breaches. Anything less is a betrayal of national responsibility.
