@mark_slapinski Self-deprecation. Humiliation. Damage to your democracy. Demolished reputation in the world. Questioned western block. Seriously, I really don't understand why people rightly criticized Biden for his inability to lead the country, but then let someone like Trump stay in power.

The Control Data Corporation CDC 6600 mainframe computer (1964-69). Generally considered to be the first successful supercomputer and the fastest in the world at that time. Costs varied between $6-$10 million.

@Math_files Logic, geometry, number theory, analysis. Scientific foundations of all the above fields. Ask the crypto guys about prime numbers, the physics guys about tensors, the economics guys about exponentials. You'll understand.

@tecmint "shutdown -r now" on a HP-UX production server running a 24x7 factory production planing system and database. Could be interrupted because it asked for a message to be broadcasted. All because I installed bash there and used its history by arrow keys as root.

@ronsterd89 That's a Fortran 77 program line punch card. Late 70ties. The whole program consisted of a full deck of those cards. You can read the Fortran code line at the very top: WRITE(6,106) I,H(L),N(I),DNDT(I) I obviously being some sort of indexing integer, WRITE an output command.

My grandson found this in a textbook we bought at Halfprice Books. He asked me if this is “what library cards looked like”, but I actually don’t know what it might be from. Any clue? There is nothing on the back.

@JoJoFromJerz Humiliation. Damage to your democracy. Demolished reputation in the world. Questioned western block. Make no mistake: I am absolutely convinced that both US political sides, both Democrats and Republicans, are responsible for this situation. Yes, some more than other.

We lost 13 troops. Injured hundreds more. Killed thousands of Iranians, including school children. Used hundreds of millions of our tax dollars. Damaged our bases in the region and countless aircraft. Sent gas prices through the roof here and abroad. And we got what exactly?

@Franc0Fernand0 +1 Keep it simple, stupid. Other people might need to understand it properly. Last year I had to go through code written by me more than 20 years ago (C, Linux). I had complaints.

After years of reading and writing code, I find that the dumbest code is the best code. It doesn't matter if it's C#, C++, or Python. Make your code simple. Don't use complex abstractions or difficult syntactic sugar, and you'll have a codebase that anyone can jump into and quickly add features without introducing bugs (or bugs that are less likely to happen). This matters more than anything else.

Pulling out of NATO would be a disaster for decades to come. Our alliances have already been damaged, and trust with our closest partners has been weakened. We need our allies to deter Russia, China, and Iran, and to address threats worldwide. America alone is a weaker America.

@geofflangdale @Adriksh Which you can switch on or off individually. From the ancient single -O of gcc 1.X to all -O* such as e.g. -fpeel-loops or -funswitch-loops you may have everything for your optimizing needs.

@Adriksh Curious if you've looked at the output of a real compiler from the past 20 years. Yes, it's easier to understand what happened with C, but optimising compilers do a fantastic job of mangling the original code and do weird and counter-intuitive things for good performance.

Linus Torvalds chooses C not out of nostalgia, but control. When you build an OS, you don’t guess what the compiler does you know how every line turns into assembly. That’s power.
