The Sacrament of Matrimony (from the Latin, matris munus, the duty or office of the mother, as having and training children is integral to marriage) represents one of the seven sacraments of the New Law, through which a baptized man and a baptized woman enter into a lifelong covenant of love and fidelity. This sacrament elevates the natural institution of marriage to a sacred reality, signifying the unbreakable union between Christ and His Church. Instituted by Christ Himself and affirmed in the Gospels, Matrimony confers grace that enables spouses to live out their vocation with mutual support, self-giving, and openness to new life. At its foundation, the sacrament rests upon the divine plan for human complementarity as described in the Book of Genesis. God created humanity as male and female, establishing marriage as the stable union ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children. Jesus elevated this bond by His presence at the wedding at Cana and by His teaching on the indissolubility of marriage. The Apostle Paul further illuminated its mystery by comparing the marital relationship to the love Christ bears for the Church, a love that is total, faithful, and fruitful. The celebration of Matrimony occurs publicly within the liturgy, ordinarily during Mass, where the couple themselves serve as the ministers of the sacrament. The exchange of consent before the priest or deacon and the assembled community constitutes the essential rite. This mutual consent must be free, informed, and deliberate, free from coercion, grave fear, or substantial error regarding the nature of marriage. The spouses promise to love and honor each other for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, until death. Rings symbolize this perpetual commitment, and the nuptial blessing invokes divine grace upon the union. The effects of the sacrament are profound and enduring. It imparts a special sacramental grace that strengthens the couple to fulfill the duties of married life, to forgive and reconcile, and to witness Christian charity within the domestic church, which is the family. Matrimony establishes an exclusive and permanent bond, rendering the marriage valid, sacramental, and indissoluble in the eyes of the Church. This permanence reflects the fidelity of God’s covenant and provides a stable foundation for family life. The sacrament also orients the spouses toward holiness, calling them to sanctify one another through daily acts of service, prayer, and shared mission. In our contemporary society, the Sacrament of Matrimony faces significant challenges, including cultural shifts toward individualism, redefinitions of marriage, and rising rates of divorce. The Church continues to uphold its teachings while offering pastoral support through preparation programs, ongoing formation, and mercy for those in difficult situations. Couples who live this sacrament faithfully contribute to the evangelization of society by demonstrating the beauty of committed love and the dignity of the family. Ultimately, the Sacrament of Matrimony reveals the generosity of God, who entrusts human persons with the capacity to participate in His creative and redemptive work. Through this vocation, spouses become living signs of divine love, building up the Kingdom of God within their homes and communities. In embracing Matrimony with reverence and responsibility, they fulfill a noble calling that echoes through eternity.

If the early Christians believed what modern Protestants believe, the Church Fathers forgot to mention it for 1,500 years. One Catholic just dismantled that myth piece by piece. Watch this.
