@JDaviesPhD @MarkLRuffalo 2/ certain behaviour patterns or attributes were simply attributed to other causes (possession, hysteria, you name it). Social norms outcast these ppl in other (inhumane) ways - the conditions still existed regardless of how they were conceptualized. But not just “suffering”

@JDaviesPhD @MarkLRuffalo This isn’t quite making sense to me - the notion or meaning of suffering vs the concept of mental disorders (no matter whether they are classified/named) seem 2 qualitatively different things.
Going back hundreds of years, before classification or “medicalization”..1/

We did not discover ‘mental disorders’ we created them, by draping very real human suffering in medical symbolism, just as the conquistadors claimed the new lands by draping them with their flags.

@AllenFrancesMD I tend to agree with this - though I’ve been late-diagnosed adhd (I won’t take any medication for it) - I am female and was high achieving academically until I needed more organization etc. but always distracted.
I had always suspected it but it didn’t matter much 2/
