Okay, Before today, I knew Arnold Ventures funded Vinay Prasad - but I didn't know the amount. Today I learned that: - Vinay Prasad was funded by ~$4m grants from 2017-23, and continues to be funded by AV - Marty Makary was also funded by AV - $500-$1m in grants - Tracy Beth Hoeg was supported indirectly by Arnold Ventures while working in Vinay Prasad's lab So basically Arnold Ventures was able to place ideologically aligned people at the FDA. TO BE CLEAR, I think @Arnold_Ventures does great things. I agree with its goal of lowering cost of medicines. However, I disagree with its approach. I also think sometimes, they end up funding ideologues - people who wants to "prove" their biases rather than being evidence or fact-driven.

Every time I talk about evidence-based medicine, someone pops up with “Big Pharma owns you.” Do you genuinely think I get paid per prescription? Because I don’t, $0 of my yearly salary comes from Pharm.. Meanwhile, plenty of wellness influencers are making commission off every supplement they push… but that doesn’t seem to bother you.

There’s been a lot of revisionist discussion about the severity of the COVID epidemic but a new analysis suggests that in the first 2 years of the pandemic, COVID killed about 150k more people than was previously reported (about a million combined). The unrecognized COVID deaths were most likely to have occurred in our most vulnerable populations; among Hispanic people, at home, among less educated people, and among people with lower incomes. When analyzed by state, Alabama, Oklahoma and South Carolina had the highest ratios of such deaths. There’s a lot to learn from this data, and it painfully shows that the US safety net has huge holes.
