According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were 263 million new malaria cases in 2023, with 95% of all Malaria cases occurring in the African Region. Artemisinin derivatives are the foundation of current antimalarial treatment, used for both severe malaria (in the form of injectable artesunate) and uncomplicated malaria through artemisinin combination therapy (ACT). However, the rise of artemisinin-resistant malaria puts further progress and decades of hard-earned gains at risk.
