He speaks about his mother's terminal illness brought on by progressive bulbar palsy (which results in progressive loss of speech and swallowing) and an isufferable end. It was not a good way to die. My condolences and thoughts are with him at this time. May the departed rest in peace. Medically assisted dying is a compassionate and ethically driven aspect of caring for the terminally ill who is fully mentally competent and I wholeheartedly endorse it. If terminally ill people want to control their own death, they must be given that option, because it is what they would choose deservingly. People who are critically ill also have the option of having their treatments witheld to allow a natural death - an overwhelmingly bearing burden that I decide on for my critically ill, young, advanced alcohol-related liver disease patients, along with their families in my ICU - almost on a daily basis. We either remove them from their ventilators and allow them to breathe their last or trickle down the life supporting medications to ever comfortingly, let that weak, waiting to rest heart, give way after prolonged days of forcefully letting it beat with the help of inotropes and vassopressor medications. There is a relief in seeing the flatline, but also the aftermath that becomes a scar for life in your heart. You learn to be tough outside, while every single time, you are just melting into a goo inside, and want out.
