The cannabis bills signed today will: ✅ Decriminalize cannabis possession and use <6 oz. ✅ Reinvest revenue raised from legalization into the communities most harmed by prohibition ✅ Ensure youth <21 possessing cannabis & alcohol are connected with community-based services.

BREAKING: @GovMurphy just signed bills to legalize, decriminalize, and clarify youth consequences for cannabis possession and use. Today has been a long time coming. For decades, NJ has made tens of thousands of arrests per year & targeted Black and brown people for cannabis.

"Ending the federal marijuana prohibition is necessary to right the wrongs of this failed war and end decades of harm inflicted on communities of color across the country. That alone is not enough" Agreed, @CoryBooker! We must begin to repair harms & ensure an equitable future.

We need cannabis arrests to end ASAP. A pending clean-up bill must be passed to ensure that legalization + decrim are signed, ending the majority of cannabis arrests. This is the next step. We urge leaders to act swiftly to get this done. And once it’s signed, let’s go further!

This is important. Arbitrary license caps undermine equity in the industry & limit the amount of tax revenue generated for communities. Thanks @SenatorScutari and @GovMurphy for working to eliminate caps & ensure equity, and prioritizing racial justice.

Lawmakers must also pass a robust decriminalization bill that protects residents before legalization takes effect, a process that’s expected to take months. After decades of prohibition, NJ voters have made clear: it’s time to end unjust and unnecessary cannabis-related arrests.

Now, New Jersey legislators and the Governor will begin to work on legislation to implement the vision for legalization that voters have pushed forward. This legislation must include provisions that repair the harms of prohibition and create an accessible and inclusive industry.
