#TrialByJury The leader of the North Eastern Circuit, Caroline Goodwin KC, has just given the Justice Minister a reality check on Labour’s plans to limit jury trials to deal with the court backlog. You don’t solve a backlog by removing one of the oldest safeguards of liberty in this country. Trial by jury is not an administrative inconvenience. It is a protection against the power of the state. Create the chaos to present the solution. Labour is exacerbating the issue and then presenting the solution, and the solution always seems to involve less liberty, more state power, and fewer protections for the individual. Limit jury trials, and what you move towards are Diplock-style courts, trials decided by a single judge without a jury. We have been down that road before, and it was never meant to be normal justice. This country fought for jury trials. They are not a bureaucratic problem to be managed away. Be very careful when governments start talking about “efficiency” in the justice system. Efficiency for the state often means fewer rights for the people.

In 1670, jurors were locked up for refusing to convict — and the courts said “never again” (Bushel’s Case). In 2026, an MP loses the whip for defending jury trial. This is what happens if you don’t have criminal and human rights lawyers right at the heart of government. Oh…wait.

Removing the Labour whip from Karl Turner MP is crass. He is defending the right to be tried by Jury- something the David Lammy believed was vital to our democracy when he was in opposition. The big question now is who will be brave enough on the Labour benches to stand up for Jury trials. I had a jury trial, and they are part of our and the world’s Crown Jewels. I am proud of our judicial system and Karl Turner will be celebrated for his outspokenness when it was needed. Who else on the Labour benches will now be brave enough to speak up?

If true, it is sad to see the Government punish an MP for standing up for jury trials – a fundamental safeguard in our justice system. Karl’s vocal support of juries shows real conviction, something our politics should reward.

Another deeply troubling move from this increasingly authoritarian government. The Labour Party has removed the whip from Karl Turner — one of the most outspoken critics of plans to restrict our long-standing right to trial by jury. The Chief Whip didn’t even have the decency to tell him in-person. Instead, the decision was briefed to the press and followed up with an email citing his remarks and conduct. Apparently, speaking forcefully in defence of fundamental liberties is now a problem. Meanwhile, Lammy presses ahead with his sinister proposal restrict our right to trial by jury — despite having no manifesto mandate. He also continues to ignore the serious warnings from the country’s most senior legal figures. Whatever your politics, the right to a fair trial by jury is a cornerstone of our system. This Government is a disgrace. Credit to @KarlTurnerMP for taking a stand.

I am being told that I have had the whip suspended but I have not had any notification from the whips about this. It seems journalists have been told but I have not.

I’ve been a loyal Labour MP for 16 years and have only broken the whip on jury trials. I’m disappointed to be suspended without prior discussion. I’ll always stand up for justice, my principles, and East Hull. See my statement below.
