maybe i'm too pretentious and too confident in my own interpretations, but i genuinely believe that someone who sees asoiaf as "fundamentally pessimistic" did not comprehend the books on a basic level
Fandom Pulse@fandompulse

Brandon Sanderson on why he would not finish George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones even if he was asked: "I wouldn't say yes to finishing ASOIAF, if asked. (And I don't think they'd ask me.) I'd respectfully decline. I wouldn't be right for the job for many reasons. I wouldn't want to put in the content that the series has, and part of that is due to my religious faith, part of it is just who I am. I don't shy away from difficult material, but I prefer not to get explicit. Honestly, when I read it in George's work, I often just cringe. I don't think it fits in prose; I think it looks tacky. But that's almost 100% due to the my religious leanings. I realize that others don't read such scenes in the same way as I do. However, I'd suggest that this is actually a minor reason why I'd be a bad writer on this series, despite having enormous respect for GRRM and his talent as a storyteller. The primary reason has to do with fundamental optimism vs pessimism. I write darkness into my books, but it is darkness as contrast to light, and there is always a spark of hope. George's work seems fundamentally pessimistic--which I don't say as a slam. One of my favorite short stories is Harrison Bergeron, which is also fundamentally pessimistic. Saying George's work is pessimistic doesn't mean that HE is pessimistic, only that he creates a work of art that evokes emotion and discussion through pessimistic themes. As a comparison, I'm glad that Silver Age science fiction produced both Harrison Bergeron and Star Trek--but I'm Star Trek, not Harrison Bergeron. Calling me in to work on this piece would be like calling in Spielberg to finish a Tarantino film. (Not to imply I deserve to be ranked with either one.) Sure, he could do it, but wouldn't you want someone who themselves makes films with Tarantino-like themes? My work is also fundamentally different from George's in our use of magic. We've talked about books, and he points out (rightly) that I often use a heavily magical component in my stories--particularly the endings. This is because I'm writing science/magic hybrids, and the idea of magic as progress is fascinating to me. George, however, prefers his magic to be arcane, unknown, and dark--not a tool, but a force you can sometimes (with great danger) apply. This is a small issue, as I'm fond of books that use magic differently, I've just made a stylistic choice in how I do what I do." Do you think this still holds?

@Gr00mGr00m @blucomazz @Templarpilled Is the author not confirming that Renly is gay not enough for you. Alongside the countless upon countless hints given from jamie he will stick his sword some where even reply didn't find or Robert saying they have an unnatural friendship?

@LeonKelem @Rusty_Young66 @shaguncrypto @AndersIwie What? You all make no sense. My entire point is in discussion on public policy the use of one's own expierence negates their point because anybody can say anything unless you back it up then your just waffling. Are you saying I'm wrong?

@vickiebd @LeonKelem @Rusty_Young66 @shaguncrypto @AndersIwie Never stated others haven't struggled but it's disingenuous to say the current job market housing prices and complete lack of upward mobility is alot harder now than it has been in a while. There is a reason boomers are the richest generation to ever exist btw 😭

@NUFCKai @Rusty_Young66 @shaguncrypto @AndersIwie I've never heard of anyone getting a $2,000 phone as a gift. All the one's I'm familiar with are sold via a monthly payment on their cell plan plan. Some anecdotes are more believable than others.

@irishwolf99 @fesshole The phrase loosely based is doing some key heavy lifting. 50 shades was originally twilight fanfic does that mean it's still twilight no because they changed the characters and the story 😭

@fesshole 'Frozen' was loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen', so it is an acceptable World Book Day costume!

Primary school teacher here. I'm so over world fucking book day. Most kids barely own a book these days so why waste a day's learning to prance about in nasty, polyester princess or boy wizard costumes? Frozen is not a book and no 7 year old has read Harry Potter. Utter nonsense.

For a long time retail staff have been told not to pursue shoplifters, much less engage with them physically, because it not only risks legal issues but puts their safety at risk. Which you'd know, if you'd ever worked in retail...
Patrick Christys@PatrickChristys

So a bloke who worked for @waitrose for 17 years tackled a shoplifter in Clapham, the same area we’ve seen rampant lawlessness … and Waitrose FIRED him?! Disgraceful. They should thank him & give him a pay rise. What message is Waitrose sending to employees…and shoplifters?!

Interesting angle for Restore to take towards young people, but they're going to run into the minor issue of young people near-universally despising their politics, and Lowe's personal brand being entirely designed to appeal to pensioners.
Rupert Lowe MP@RupertLowe10

No point calling Green supporting young men and women ‘Marxists’ or ‘indoctrinated’ or ‘hard-left’. Some are, fine. Most aren’t. Most are just feeling patronised, insulted and neglected by an establishment that quite evidently doesn’t care about them. It hasn’t for a very long time. We all know that. They see the system doesn’t work for them, and they’re reacting to it. Democratically and fairly. Do I think Polanski will solve their problems? No. No I do not. Do I understand why they’re searching for an answer? Yes. Absolutely. Our job is to offer them an alternative option that they feel speaks for them. Polanski has done that, to be fair. Our job is to make sure Restore Britain does the same, but from a very different position. One that rewards their hard work, protects our borders, and unapologetically puts aspirational young British men and women at the very top of our agenda. One that provides skilled jobs which pay well, a path to living in a decent home in a safe neighbourhood - the opportunity to build a family. That’s what Restore Britain is aiming to do. Millions of young Brits are already backing that message. It’s wonderful to see. The argument against Polanski can be won, but only with a positive vision. Not patronising insults. Restore Britain has that vision.

The fact that S5E6 is not the worst rated episode of Game of Thrones is definitely evidence of fans disliking the ending of the series rather than actually reacting to offensively poor quality. Further, high ratings through Season 7 are also evidence of the same, as that season was rushed and stupid. Nevertheless, S5E6 was so gratuitously bad between the Sand Snakes, whom nobody cared about, and the completely unnecessary Sansa rape scene, that I seriously thought about not finishing the show. In fact, when I rewatched the entire series with my fiancée, I skipped that episode on purpose. At least Season 8 looked good, even if it was fairly stupid. But still, it was not any stupider than Season 7, when I rewatched the whole series. But that one episode... it stands out as completely unnecessary.

Boomers can’t understand why people would turn on the older generations, all whilst telling younger generations how entitled and greedy they are, and how the state of the world is entirely our fault, all somehow whilst our generation has had literally no power to make decisions.
