NZFirst Campaign Policy Announcement: NZFirst Will Break Up the Supermarket Duopoly, Bring Food Prices Down for Kiwis New Zealand First is today announcing an election policy to end the supermarket duopoly - breaking their stranglehold, backing kiwi suppliers, and delivering fairer prices at the checkout for kiwi families. For too long, New Zealanders have faced rising grocery bills while Woolworths and Foodstuffs control more than 80 percent of the grocery market. The Commerce Commission has previously found those supermarket giants earning around $1 million a day in excess profits. Meanwhile kiwi families are choosing between heating and eating. The massive imbalance is being felt across the supply chain - recently a grower received just 60c per kg of peas, while those same peas retail for as much as $5.79. The current system sees job losses and uncertainty hit food producers such as McCain Foods and Heinz Wattie's - it means less for producers, less for workers, and more pressure on families. New Zealand First will introduce legislation to reform the system and break up Foodstuffs into two nationwide cooperatives based on brand: one for New World and Four Square, and another for Pak’nSave - putting both in direct competition with Woolworths New Zealand. Real competition means real pressure to lower prices, improve value, and treat suppliers fairly. Our policy will include tougher penalties, faster investigations, and real enforcement powers for the Commerce Commission - penalties for serious breaches will be lifted to match Australia, including fines of up to $10 million, three times the gain, or 10 percent of turnover. The role of the current toothless Groceries Commissioner, belatedly established by Labour in 2023, will also be reformed giving the position the proper powers to investigate, make binding decisions, and impose penalties directly - not just sit on the sidelines and give warnings. We will also address the supermarket giants’ stranglehold over who gets access to the shelf and who doesn’t. When they control the pathway from farm to shelf, they control the price. A new framework for industry rules will be introduced under the Commerce Act 1986, allowing targeted action to fix competition problems more quickly without waiting for lengthy legislative change – it will ensure kiwi producers are no longer pushed out or squeezed off the shelf by a system that favours the biggest players. The days of easy profits and zero accountability for the supermarket giants need to end. Hardworking kiwis need real action to tackle the price of food at the supermarket.

@EstiOSRS Honestly to me it seems cheap but I guess you factor in everything else it gets expensive. The reason I used that example was the last concert I went to was like 1200 for 2 tickets

Hot take but SpaceX is probably the best civil engineering company in the world. Somehow they are able to make these insanely complex ground system and building designs and find the perfect contractors and technicians to build out their ideas in months or 1-2 years. I feel like we need the SpaceX methodology and their contractors across many projects. If we did we could probably have gotten so much done and in a much higher quality. They say you can’t have fast, cheap, and good, but somehow SpaceX always manages to deliver on all 3.

SpaceX's Gigabay in Florida is coming along pretty well, ain't it? 😉 📸 - @NASASpaceflight

Four humans are about to fall into a 10,000°C wall of plasma at 25,000 mph with a heat shield NASA knows is flawed. Tomorrow evening. Off the coast of San Diego. Orion hits the atmosphere at 36 times the speed of sound. The air can't move out of the way fast enough, so it compresses into a shockwave twice as hot as the surface of the Sun. The plasma ionizes the surrounding air and blocks all radio signals. For several minutes, the crew is falling faster than any humans have ever traveled inside a spacecraft, and nobody on the ground can talk to them. The heat shield is 186 blocks of a material called Avcoat glued to a titanium skeleton. It works by charring, melting, and disintegrating on purpose. The destruction of the outer layer is the cooling mechanism. There is no backup system. No redundancy. The heat shield works or the crew doesn't come home. The Artemis I heat shield came back with over 100 locations where chunks had ripped off. NASA spent two years figuring out why, concluded it was gas pressure building up inside the material during reentry, and decided not to replace the shield. They changed the flight path instead. Steeper angle, less time in the danger zone. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said publicly that this approach "is not the right way to do things long term." The capsule will slow from 25,000 mph to 17 mph in thirteen minutes. Parachutes don't even deploy until the last four. Everything before that is managed by a curved piece of titanium and glue entering air twice as hot as the Sun. Tomorrow at 5:07 PM Pacific, San Diego might hear a sonic boom. That sound is four people betting their lives on NASA's math being right.
Insider Paper@TheInsiderPaper

NEW: NASA says that people along the coast of San Diego County in California might hear a sonic boom Friday afternoon when the Orion capsule carrying the Artemis II crew re-enters the atmosphere, wrapping up its historic trip around the moon. The boom may be loud enough to rattle windows when the capsule re-enters the atmosphere shortly before 5 p.m, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports

@nickofnz Its not climate change. It geoengineering. CO2 is not a toxin. Trees breathe it and turn it into O2. Climate always changes. B4 climate change they had global warming, and b4 that global cooling. None ever materialize. Just more fleecing of the useless eaters

@JoeHiker6 @kiwixterminator @chrisluxonmp How is that anything to do with me agreeing with the above that small businesses get stuck with a massive tax bill at the end of the year but get no financial help? And maybe companies export jobs because NZers are undesirable to hire with their attitude

The conflict in the Middle East is directly leading to higher prices at the pump in New Zealand. That’s affecting households and businesses across the country, but the Government can’t afford to ease the pressure for everyone. We can’t repeat the mistakes of Covid where excessive spending led to higher inflation and more debt. We have to get the balance right. The most sensible and affordable thing for our government to do is provide timely, temporary, and targeted support to those who need it most. We’ve already announced that 143,000 low-and middle-income working families will receive an extra $50 a week to help with rising fuel costs. And from tomorrow, more than a million New Zealanders will also get an increase to the financial support they receive from the government. Nearly 1 million superannuitants get a boost – for a married couple on Super, that’s up over $50 more a fortnight. 280,000 families will get more through Family Tax Credits - up to $1,050 extra a year. Students and beneficiaries will get around $20 more a fortnight. We’ve also made changes to Working for Families, which will support 140,000 more households. That’s on top of the tax relief we’ve already delivered and FamilyBoost support for families with kids in early childcare. We’re also boosting KiwiSaver, helping you grow savings faster for your first home or retirement. We can’t control global fuel prices, but we are focused on helping Kiwis with targeted support that New Zealand can afford.
