BREAKING: China just abandoned Iran's oil. And started buying from Alaska. The country that armed Iran. That defied U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil. Is now buying American oil instead. Why? Alaska is closer. Hormuz is closed. Iran is unreliable. Trump didn't just close the Strait. He redirected Chinese oil demand to American soil. Iran loses its biggest customer. America gains it. The financial blockade didn't just hurt Iran. It forced China to buy American. This is not luck. This is chess. And Trump just took the queen.

Trump clearly sold out Taiwan. When asked on Air Force One on the way back from China whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, Trump replied: “I don’t want to say. That question was asked to me today by President Xi. I said, ‘I don’t talk about it.’” Trump also said, “On Taiwan, President Xi feels very strongly about it.” It’s clear China got the green light to move ahead, especially now that the U.S. is bogged down in the Iran war. Under Trump, our allies can’t trust us, and our adversaries don’t fear us.

@samhfinance The 10-Year Bond Yield: As yields rise, the government's cost to borrow increases, which often leads to more money printing or higher taxes—both of which fuel the inflation that eats your £930k.

@samhfinance Assume a standard longterm inflation rate of 3%, your £930k will feel much smaller in 67 years. Subtract 3% from your interest rate 7%. This leaves you with a Real Return of 4%. £10,000 at 4% for 67 years ~£140,000. Great return but more for kitchen renovation & nice car money.

The UK should scrap the state pension. Give every newborn a £10,000 investment account instead. £10k at 7% for 67 years = roughly £930k. The average person pays about £113,000 in NI over their career. That buys you £241/week at retirement age. Why are we still doing it this way?

@samhfinance If inflation stays at 8% for even a few years, the real value of your savings drops off a cliff. Make matters worse, gov usually taxes you on the £930k (the gain), not the £140k (the real gain). You end up paying tax on profits that haven't actually made you any wealthier.

@bmay Somehow Harakiri comes to mind... a self-inflicted wound. Labour party showing itself in disarray and some MPs not any better than the backstabbing Tories we've seen... they're not really inspiring people to vote LP when they themselves are fighting each other?

Labour don’t need opposition do they? They can do it for themselves! People have campaigned and waited 14 years for a Labour govt and it’s being ruined by a few overreaching and over ambitious MPs and a mayor. I am incandescent! 😡😡😡 #HoldTheLine #IStandWithStarmer #Labour

I joined the Labour Party in 1993. I know exactly how rare Labour governments are, and how hard they are to win. What some colleagues seem to forget is that the public voted against chaos, ego and endless internal psychodrama. They wanted seriousness back in government. Keir Starmer rebuilt Labour from electoral ruin into a party trusted enough to govern again. That didn’t happen by accident. It took discipline, resilience and political maturity. Do we need debate? Of course we do. But destabilising a Labour government barely into office after 14 years out of power is not strategy. It is recklessness. Too many people in politics love the theatre of rebellion more than the responsibility of governing. The country is exhausted by that culture. Labour succeeds when it focuses on delivery, stability and improving people’s lives — not when it disappears into factional self-indulgence while Reform and the Tories sit back and laugh. Government is precious. We should start acting like it.

@Oh1997J @bmay I'm not sure it's Starmer turning people away. It's been less than 2 years. He inherited a mess from the Tories. He's done a good job considering. Mid-elections are always protest votes. And it'll give the constituents a flavour of Reform's ability on the local / council level.

Everyone punch drunk about Burnham. I hope they’re confident that his experience stacks up sufficiently to deal with Putin, negotiate with EU, China, the Trump administration, Iran, manage energy shocks, etc. Does anyone know what his plan is? Does he? This is all a bit daft.

@wesstreeting Don't expect loyalty when you've 'stabbed' your leader to get where you are. Even if the challenger wins, the "stab" often poisons their entire tenure. The Challenger's fate :

@chemosh933 @PolitlcsUK Its an all or nothing gamble. If he loses, he faces the political wilderness. It's almost as if he's been 'anointed' as the only one that can save the Labour party. Unfortunately I don't buy any of it because it feels like they're putting the party before the country's needs.

@PolitlcsUK It would seem that the plot for Andy Burnham's return as Labour MP by asking Josh Simmons to give up his seat is poorly calculated - a high-stakes gamble where Labour risks losing a seat & sinking further into internal strife. Projected outcome of a by-election in Makerfield.

BREAKING Sir Keir Starmer will have no choice but to allow Andy Burnham to stand in the Makerfield by-election, a senior government source has said. Both the Cabinet and Number 10 aides are clear that Starmer will not be able to block Burnham this time because his authority has been so severely weakened Josh Simons has stood down as the Labour MP for Makerfield to make way for Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham is expected to challenge Starmer if he wins the by-election. In January Starmer used his majority on the National Executive Committee, Labour's ruling body, to block Burnham from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Labour subsequently finished third behind the Greens and Reform. A senior government source said that there is "no way" that Starmer can stop Burnham from standing now given that his authority has been so severely damaged. They said the view is shared by both the Cabinet and Number 10 aides. "It's all about Andy now," they said.
