I had almost no sleep last night bc Arthur was very fussy all night long, however my husband went out before work to fetch me a fresh (still warm!) almond croissant, so a pretty good morning on the balance of it ๐Ÿ˜‚

So sorry, that sounds miserable. For anyone reading who might have it: cyclospora does not clear on its own, and Imodium will not touch it. It is a parasite that responds to a specific antibiotic, TMP-SMX. If you have had watery diarrhea for more than a few days, get evaluated. Feel better soon.

It doesn't matter that most of my eleven siblings read at 2nd-3rd grade level. Since I excelled, educational neglect must not be so bad. In fact we should encourage ALL functionally illiterate parents to homeschool because parents always know best and are never abusive

This is our plan for the coming days. The next game weโ€™ll attend is Germanyโ€™s Round of 32 match in Boston on the 29th. Since we have 7 days to get there, we decided not to take the direct route and instead make a huge detour through Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and a few other states. Any recommendations for places or cities to visit along the way are very welcome!

1990s summer is no longer possible because everyone puts their kids in summer camp. You can be the one person who doesnโ€™t, but then your kids are home with no neighborhood kids to play with all summer.

Sleepovers were a huge part of my 80s-90s childhood, and I learned a lot from them and never had a deeply traumatic experience. But itโ€™s hilarious to remember how much sketchy stuff I was laterally exposed to that way. My parents had no idea. Iโ€™m OK with letting them go.
Emma Camp@emmma_camp_

I actually think "not fully knowing the other parents" is part of the point. It's super helpful to learn how to adapt to another family's rules/routine and be a polite house guest. Obviously, don't be reckless, but I learned a lot from having sleepovers with friends whose parents had much different parenting philosophies from mine.

We have three kids in one row of seats in our family. Diono seats are the ones you want to / need to buy if you are in this kind of scenario. My wife spent quite a bit of time researching it all but thankfully she figured it out and we didn't need to buy a new car. Nevertheless, we wanted more kids and even if we had to buy a new car we would have of course, but were glad we didn't have to. But a lot of people aren't like us, I know that. And I know that there are a bunch of little things in our culture which do kind of, weirdly, soft cap people at two. They aren't necessarily (always) restrictions but a sum of parts that just sort of makes more than two a different thing in their minds. It's not a very titillating or satisfying discussion because it's all about these little details that add up. It's very wonk-ish, but it's that stuff that really does add up for people at scale. Devil is in the details etc..
Michael F Kane@MichaelFKane

One major reasons is laws and regulations. For instance, children are required to be in carseats for a very long time. Very few vehicles are large enough to carry three car seats. (I am aware there are some carseats specially designed to be narrow enough for three wide) Larger vehicles with three rows of seats are now much more expensive due to regulations. Want a bigger family? You have to solve for transportation. All this is to say that the government has made 3 kids HIGHLY inconvenient.

We started this last year for 6th grade - but I started him at the beginning of the series - which the publisher recommended. We actually worked through multiple levels last school year and 3 this school year -- it was not hard, but it will depend what pace your child can absorb the material and what your overall plan is. But we did not see a reason to drag it out and had time to work on every day. We may slow down on this upper level ones, we'll see how they go.

Open-and-go grammar curriculum: if thatโ€™s what you need, I highly recommend Fix It! Grammar from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). *easy to use *my kids love it (for real!) *thorough There are multiple levels, and each course is based on a classic story. It only takes a few minutes a day. Read my full review here: nickitruesdell.com/iew-fix-it-graโ€ฆ

This is the only curriculum that helped my 12yr old understand grammar. He was behind (about 5th grade level) at the beginning of 7th grade. We worked through level 3 and it has definitely improved his understanding. Because he loves writing stories, we really needed to get him caught up on with it. We also do the Writing and Rhetoric program through Classical Academic Press.

The research is stacked to the moon that parents are the primary driver of faith in children. So, it continues to make no sense to me that churches continue to assume kids need youth ministry. I donโ€™t get it.
PsyPost.org@PsyPost

A new survey of over 16,000 churchgoers reveals that simply taking kids to religious services isn't enough to pass on a faith. Instead, warm, open conversations about religion at home are the strongest predictor of lasting faith in adulthood. dlvr.it/TSRMNC

High school teacher realizes her students cannot read & isn't sure what to do about it. 54% of U.S. adults read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level. My question: When do we give the public school system the blame it deserves?

In a way, Wisconsin feels like a happier, more friendly, less decrepit / dysfunctional version of Upstate New York. I suspect that any Upstater disgruntled by the social decline in NY could relocate to WI and be quite pleased. WI is our closest non-dysfunctional analogue. Land and climate are strikingly similar; both regions are heavy heavy drinkers with similar "northern" type accents. Lots of farming, deer hunting, four seasons, ice fishing. Kind of insane to think of going "home" but to a genuinely nice, friendly, non-burned-out version of home.
