It’s quite obvious they’ve been priced out of the boroughs they once lived{white, black or otherwise}.The salaries of city employees used to be enough for them to buy homes in the boroughs ~ that is definitely not the case now.

Just stop. The data center is the end user. This isn't inventory purchases that are going to be resold, or raw materials that will be made into a final product. There is absolutely no valid tax policy argument for any of this. You're just demanding special carveouts for multinational corporations that are running on extremely high operating margins as it is.
Basic tax policy is you want to try to keep the tax on a wide base with a low rate. This is dramatically narrowing the base, which means the rate is going to have to increase. Plus you get distortions where people try to reclass transactions into the non-taxed category.

Any story on sales tax exemptions for data centers need to mention that sales taxes should not apply to data centers to begin with.

The biggest thing happening behind the scenes in the "expensive lunch" discourse is that Zoomers are eating out at ridiculously high rates. It's a silent assumption for a ton of young people that restaurants are a basic necessity, not an occasional treat.

NYC is spending too much for too little. Small schools (under 400 kids) cost $18,294/student vs. $11,284 at full-size ones. 380 buildings are under 60% capacity. Enrollment's down 17%, but budgets haven't followed. @cbcny says funding based on actual enrollment saves $400M/year.

We've already run this experiment. In 2000, NYC spent about $10k per student on education. That's about $20k per student in 2026 dollars.
This year NYC will spend over $40k per student on education.
So we've already doubled spending on education. Did it help?

@fomerlyrauljade @harryh yea I think it's better to look at the per-student funding on the school level, for the median NYC school it's $24.5k, for the top 20% schools by student poverty rate it's $33k, least poor 20% is just under $20k

@harryh Per student numbers are bad and skewed. NYC spent a billion in private school tuition for families who could otherwise afford it in their own because they sued the dept of education for specialized instruction.
