@olive2247 @Pepperscorn @WonderKing82 okay I was thinking of the traditional definition of redlining - being denied mortgages on discriminatory grounds - so you just mean "prices have gone up more than wages"

@NeastWS @Pepperscorn @WonderKing82 The working class has been systematically redlined. It’s quite obvious they’ve been priced out of the boroughs they once lived{white, black or otherwise}.The salaries of city employees used to be enough for them to buy homes in the boroughs ~ that is definitely not the case now.

@NeastWS @Pepperscorn @WonderKing82 Now law abiding people are under constant surveillance fined at every turn & the working class that runs NYC has been redlined & has to commute several hours for wages congress men believe is well under minimum wage; while our streets are flooded by sun showers because of “it”

@olive2247 @Pepperscorn @WonderKing82 the homicides are relatively low given the 2000 murders citiwide in 1990, people getting mugged all the time was the biggest difference in how it effected people's behavior

@NeastWS @Pepperscorn @WonderKing82 Whatever. There was limited police presence. Communities needed to police themselves. The homicide “victims” tended to be understood as predators within communities. It was still better than this phony bullshit.

I swear there’s going to be a time when we will hear about how the Upper West Side was tragically gentrified by white newcomers. Honestly, park slope is an interesting case of a NYC neighborhood that transitioned from majority working class white to majority professional whites

Just stop. The data center is the end user. This isn't inventory purchases that are going to be resold, or raw materials that will be made into a final product. There is absolutely no valid tax policy argument for any of this. You're just demanding special carveouts for multinational corporations that are running on extremely high operating margins as it is. Basic tax policy is you want to try to keep the tax on a wide base with a low rate. This is dramatically narrowing the base, which means the rate is going to have to increase. Plus you get distortions where people try to reclass transactions into the non-taxed category. Who even came up with this?

@heatherpedia it's a treatment to help the reader to feel better about themselves idk how the utilitarian calculus works out with the author's sacrifice of dignity, The Cut should publish how much they've paid the writer for the piece so we know what depravity we've gotten ourselves into

What else is there to do? They can’t afford concerts, movies, bowling, amusement parks, sports games, clubs, etc. Is the American dream now to sit in your house eating PB&J except for when you are at work?
Jeremiah Johnson 🌐@JeremiahDJohns

The biggest thing happening behind the scenes in the "expensive lunch" discourse is that Zoomers are eating out at ridiculously high rates. It's a silent assumption for a ton of young people that restaurants are a basic necessity, not an occasional treat.

The verse Lander recited was an Arabic-language denunciation of the Christian doctrine of the divinity of Jesus Christ. Jewish candidates for office normally show more respect for the majority faith in this country.

The left loves the “the company fired people while also making profit” talking point but it’s not totally clear to me why I’m supposed to think the latter should preclude the former.

@DKThomp @jbarro I think the four billion dollars in NCAA scholarships and two billion dollars in NIL money would be a sufficient draw to keep the leagues afloat

something i wonder: on Earth-2, where the entire Ivy League is taken over by a bunch of nerd presidents who don't like sports and just want their institutions to focus on traditional reading/writing/studying/scholarship, what happens to these leagues? which is another way of asking: if parents and kids were suddenly made to think that youth sports had NO relationship to college acceptance and the only reason to play was either (a) have fun or (b) become a professional athlete, what would happen to these leagues?

I have never heard any parent speak positively about this travel-team private-league sports stuff. So why do they have their kids participate in it? (The answer is rarely "my kid is headed for D1") Don't schools have teams anymore? theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/05/…

@fomerlyrauljade @harryh yea I think it's better to look at the per-student funding on the school level, for the median NYC school it's $24.5k, for the top 20% schools by student poverty rate it's $33k, least poor 20% is just under $20k

@harryh Per student numbers are bad and skewed. NYC spent a billion in private school tuition for families who could otherwise afford it in their own because they sued the dept of education for specialized instruction.

@NeastWS @F530Josh I don’t actually think your chart and the original post are conflicting. The FRED graph shows young-age spending has grown in real terms since the 1980s. The generational comparison shows each cohort spent roughly similarly (in today’s dollars) during their own 20s.
