I don't put 'opinions are my own' in my twitter bio, because I barrow most of mine from TV, books and video games. Sure there's some originality mixed in there for spice but I'm not fooling anybody.

@mobiletortoise Between 11,000 and 13,000 yen a piece (according to a friend; I literally didn’t look at the price tag and just bought them because how could I not)

@BrianKaris It mentions not supporting directional lights. Does that mean they don’t render at all when it’s enabled? Or they just go down a different path

Yeah, I certainly don’t expect every UI engineer to “be Anton” — net value is the most important thing, and that usually means using the most productive framework. Meta moving to React for VR was net positive despite decreased responsiveness. I just want everyone to still feel the pain of the trade and always look for mitigations.

He's so right. I'm far from flush (especially after this last Hollywood fucking over), but I really need to figure out how to get to Venice and the Sedlec Ossuary before my body goes, "Hold it right there, pal."

@NickDarnell @SodrekR BgStrings don’t need to be, we have lots of those defined statically if I remember right. But the options were different. We actually stopped using the BgOptions and pull from the CLI arguments directly now.

#UnrealEngine developers: did you know you can write BuildGraph scripts in C# instead of XML? I didn’t know that until last week. Currently going through and rewriting all our build scripts. Good times. Wish I had known sooner, but very happy to at least know now.

@RegnerBA @SodrekR The amount you need to pass in options into the thunks is annoying, but if I can declare them all statically - afterall, the graph is defined at the class level, not the function, and these definitions dont actually resolve until combined with context - this should be doable.

@RegnerBA @SodrekR Cool - I've started messing with it too. Did much change in 5.4? It feels 'kinda there'. In the 5.3 version you can't put options statically in the graph class, which is annoying. Might need to flip the assembler output out to figure out why its not picking these up.

@NickDarnell @SodrekR I was waiting for some core issues to get fixed and Epic merged those fixes last week. I am on vacation now but will try and get something posted. You can check my closed PRs on the Unreal GitHub for some basics. I will get something proper together though.

@SodrekR There is one in InstalledBuild.cs. I will try and put something up next week as well.

At some point this kinda stuff will look as-good-or-better than high-res meshes, and be more performant, and be easier to build with. Kinda hate to say it but I'm increasingly convinced that 3D grids (at multiple scales) are the only plausible way to build proper live virtual worlds. Overlapping assemblies of meshes can look great but the gap between the visual and simulated worlds keeps getting bigger.

I'm building a renderer that uses very small voxels and displacement mapping to modernize the retro aesthetic of games like Doom and Quake. More info in thread #voxels #gamedev #rendering
