@SocEnvJustice There was a big drop in traffic 2019-20, but every other year saw an increase. It is misleading to say that traffic levels in London are dropping

SEJ quoted in today's article in the Times which shows average bus speeds in central London have become as slow as 6.6mph, with journey times having risen in every borough over the past decade. Yet over that time the number of cars on the roads dropped by 5 per cent.

@SocEnvJustice That has been well researched. The main reasons that high streets are failing is that they offer a poor environment and fail to support the retail offer. They have also failed to diversify to include housing quickly enough.

The more we read the report the more questions we have. It convinces that if high streets are ped-friendly more people will access them on foot & spend money. But it doesn't assess why many high streets are failing & says nothing about the impact of LTNs on adjacent high streets.

@CharlotteCGill The money goes to TfL to improve transport. They publish a report on this. A journalist could easily find this out.

@JohnJohnStewart @LonTravelWatch Just look at the data, John. There was a big COVID related drop 2019-2020. Traffic in London has grown every year before and after, albeit that it has not yet quite recovered to 2019 levels.

That is not correct, according to the DfT's 2023 report: "The trend has been different across different areas of London, with the largest decline in central London, followed by inner London. Traffic in central London in 2022 was 14 per cent lower than in 2019, and seven per cent lower in inner London. Traffic is down the least in outer London (five per cent lower than in 2019)"

The more I think about @LonTravelWatch excellent report, the more certain I am Mayor needs to ask urgent questions. Why when traffic levels in London have been falling have bus journey times got slower? Not enough bus lanes? Too many cycle lanes? LTNs? Road works? Poor enforcement of bus lanes. Bus passengers deserve answers.
London TravelWatch@LonTravelWatch

Yesterday we launched a new report - The next stop: Making London's buses better bit.ly/makingbusesbet… Did you know the average London bus travels at just 9mph? At that speed a chicken would give them a run for their money 🐓 It's time to make buses better #BetterLondonBuses

@sharrond62 Electricity prices are set on the basis of the last source to be switched on, usually gas. Blame the crazy pricing system set by privatisation which just provides huge profits for generators.

@Jenny_1884 I actually prefer phone appointments because it means I don’t have to drive for 25 minutes to the surgery.

GPs need to stop all this nonsense doing phone appointments. The time it takes to speak to someone on the phone they could have seen someone face to face When ever you pop into surgeries they are empty It’s time to go back to doing 100% face to face appointments

@graceblakeley Good analysis, but this is a direct consequence of globalisation as lower paid jobs in the west are in direct competition with similar jobs in China and elsewhere. Given labour costs in the west this is a competition the west is bound to lose.

All over the rich world, people’s lives are getting worse. It’s harder to afford the basics, keep a roof over your head, and access care when you’re sick. People will keep voting for whoever they think will bring back prosperity. 1/

@EvanDriscoll10 @BuckCllr @JohnJohnStewart 1 Consultation responses are self selected and not necessarily representative 2 Main roads do have traffic issues, but general traffic growth is much more of a cause than LTNs. Main roads have similar problems even where there are no LTNs. Other solutions are needed.

@NickLesterDavis @BuckCllr @JohnJohnStewart Here you go again. Ignoring what has been put to you. Ignoring well documented problems of LTNs. Ignoring the plight of residents being victims of LTNs. Rude indeed. I can only assert you have no capability of feeling empathy. And here are some reminders. 👇

This is ideology gone mad. Lambeth Council's latest proposed LTN. I have known these streets for 45 yrs. They are proposing to make aleady quiet streets even quieter and already heavily-trafficked streets take even more traffic. haveyoursay.lambeth.gov.uk/en-GB/folders/…

@EvanDriscoll10 @BuckCllr @JohnJohnStewart I don’t need to be rude to you, but all you have done is to assert, without evidence, that LTNs are unpopular. I’m sure you have spoken to people who are opposed, but the evidence that this is a majority is absent.

@NickLesterDavis @BuckCllr @JohnJohnStewart Wrong conclusion. Remember also, local elections’ low turnout. But then again you yourself have never shown any consideration for main road residents so you probably don’t care.

@NickLesterDavis @BuckCllr @JohnJohnStewart Are you suggesting LTNs aren’t an important local issue in Hackney? Some like them but that doesn’t make them less problematic.
Evan Driscoll@EvanDriscoll10

70% of Hackney’s roads is closed to motor traffic by LTNs. As a result, even during the summer holiday residential Graham Rd (A1207) is congested most of the day, every day. @mayorofhackney & @hackneycouncil ignore its residents. We don’t matter to them 😢 👇23/8/24 at 12pm

@PacerClara Operators increasingly run fleets dedicated to specific services. You don’t want a commuter train for a long trip. Inter-city carriages are wholly inefficient for commuter journeys.

Right I have an entirely unresearched theory that may be completely wrong but I want to put it out there and you can yell at me if you want. Loco hauled passenger trains are now pretty rare in the UK, but are seemingly still *somewhat* common in mainland Europe. [1/]
