Sports betting legalization reduces net investments of households by nearly 14% overall. $1 of sports betting reduces net investment by over $2, increases credit card debt, but has no effect on participation in lotteries or other online gambling outlets. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

What gives the authors and @AdamMGrant confidence to imply causation? Other than knowing it will go viral that way? Causation could run the other way - emotional outbursts causing tablet use - or they could have a shared cause (like an environment with socioeconomic stress)
Adam Grant@AdamMGrant

Heavy screen use might create a vicious cycle for young kids. New data: the more time 3.5-year-olds spent on tablets, the more angry outbursts they had at age 4.5... and the more they used tablets at 5.5. Digital soothing is not a substitute for teaching emotion regulation.

Every year, a lottery determines who gets an H-1B visa to work in the US. The game, it turns out, is rigged. Outsourcing and staffing firms are exploiting loopholes, crowding out US employers and immigrants who play it fair. We have exclusive data to show it for the 1st time 🧵

ACOs saw these fraudulent payments in claims data, and assumed that means they were actually paid out. Interestingly, this story implies they could be in escrow. Which is great news for taxpayers - but doesn't address ACOs' concerns over being held accountable for these costs.

If you are a legislator or media w/ a health beat in FL, please read Joan's blog. In short: next wk, the state is going to (without warning) require EVERY Medicaid, SNAP & TANF user to sign up for a new web portal, with 2 factor auth. (they'd need email plus a cell).
Joan Alker@JoanAlker1

Breaking: On top of unwinding millions of Floridians will have to create a new account next week online. My blog explains: Florida’s Rolling Out a New Medicaid/SNAP Eligibility System Next Week – Throwing Gas on the Unwinding Fire ccf.georgetown.edu/2023/11/29/flo… via @GeorgetownCCF

This is at least partly (and potentially mostly) a matter of politics. Whenever a demo with real teeth was proposed—pour one out for the 2016 mandatory Part B demo that never was—powerful interest groups revolted.
U.S. CBO@USCBO

CBO estimates that the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation’s (CMMI’s) activities increased federal spending between 2011 and 2020 and will also increase it, by $1.3 billion, from 2021 to 2030. In 2010, CBO projected that CMMI would produce savings. cbo.gov/publication/59…

Everyone needs to remember the name Jaahnavi Kandula. She was a 23 year old student who was hit and killed by speeding Seattle police earlier this year. Other cops were then caught laughing about her death and calling her "limited value." She leaves behind a single mom in India

This tragic story has it all: - police recklessly, remorselessly ending someone's life - spinning the story so the victim is at fault - invoking the victim's demographics to minimize the harm - repeat offenders with no consequences - the police union elevating the worst attitudes
Kshama Sawant@cmkshama

Seattle Police officer Daniel Auderer cackled in response to the death of Jaanhavi Kandula, a young Indian exchange student, after she was run over by a police vehicle. And he said her life "had limited value." Working people need to demand an independent, public investigation into this outrage.  But it's not surprising that, according to @dubseatv, Auderer has been the subject of 18 investigations, not one of them having resulted in him being fired, let alone facing legal consequences. He's far from an exception in police departments nationwide — under both Democrats & Republicans — which use excessive force with impunity, especially against the poor, those facing mental health challenges, women, and marginalized communities.  The so-called Office of Professional Accountability has singularly failed to hold Seattle Police accountable — cops overseeing cops will never work.  We need independently elected community oversight with full powers over the police. But to win this, working people will need to organize independently of the Democratic Party.

New work: Ophthalmologists accepting manufacturer payments chose more expensive therapies. Had those providers prescribed akin to their colleagues who didn't accept payments, Medicare spending would have been $643M lower from 2013-19. jamanetwork.com/journals/jama-…

SDOH policy has a "when all you have is a hammer (strong policy levers limited to health insurance provision + payment of medical care providers) everything looks like a nail (something that can be solved by insurance or providers)" problem (Someday I'll organize these thoughts)

@joshuapliu I think your last sentence is the heart of the matter. IMO it boils down to 2 questions: 1) Is the funding truly additive at a societal level? 2) Do health systems* deploy the funding as (or more) efficiently & effectively as social services orgs would? * or payors

@Nico_Lewine Agree that we should not “rely” on health systems to address SDoH Disagree with authors that health systems should stay out of it As long as the government doesn’t invest less and health system support is additive, the support from health systems should be welcome
